The cause of crime can be various. In case of juvenile delinquency, although most criminal motivations may be accidental or temporary, they are likely to show a great tendency of potential recurrence. Today, many studies on the cause of juvenile delinquency criminal behavior tend to focus on systemic structure of society, family disorganization, and social and psychological inadequacy or instability. This approach can be theoretically important in explaining actual phenomenon of crime itself, however, it is certainly not sufficiently effective in policy-making process for preventing juvenile crimes in future. This thesis will lay emphasis on accurate preventative measures of juvenile delinquency through individual-level analysis by examining and understanding their personal and family backgrounds, educational and societal environments. Furthermore, based on actual surveys and previous studies, it will investigate realistic and concrete ways to preclude teenage drinking and smoking that have significant correlations and influences on juvenile criminal behavior. The method of direct surveying was used in collecting data for the study. The items on survey questionnaire were social and family background, family and school life, relationship with other peers, the level of drinking and smoking. The subjects were 1,230 teenagers in juvenile reform schools. The SPSS Package, a statistical software program, was used for the frequency-, cross-, and correlation-analysis of the content and data collected by surveys. In conclusion, more in depth analysis on highly correlated items, such as teenage drinking and smoking, will be explained further. In addition, it will look into correlations between teenage drinking and smoking and other significant items such as living status with parents, behaviors in school, relationship with other peers, and working experience. Although law prohibits the sales of alcoholic beverages and cigarettes to teenagers, they tend to have easy access to them and lack in self-awakening. In today`s reality, alcohols and cigarettes are usually sold to teenagers as valuable consumers when there is a lack of careful supervision. Therefore, it is important to educate our children and constantly remind the danger of consumption in alcohol and cigarettes, starting in elementary education in order to increase the ability of awareness and self-awakening. It is because the data showed that they are more likely to start consuming alcohol and cigarettes in elementary or secondary schools. One possible way to prevent is suggested that an increase in extra-curriculums and recreational activities will attract teenagers to participate and get involved in community in more healthy ways. Moreover, it is observed that when parents find out their children`s drinking and smoking behavior, it is better show an attitude of willingness to understand and persuasion, instead of scolding. Continuous careness and even praise can lead teenagers to have self-confidence and prevent them from getting involved any delinquent behaviors. The same approach can work the same for teachers in any educational setting. Teachers should attempt to be good role models to guide students to behave in proper ways. For instance, it is desirable that schools recently established smoking areas within school buildings and campus. Furthermore, systematized advisory guidance for after-school activities can play an important role in preventing students from drinking and smoking.
