Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease involving gastrointestinal tract and its incidence and prevalcne are increasing in Asian areas including Korea. However, in Asian countries, the awareness for Crohn’s disease has not be sufficient compared with Western world, leading to inadequate quality for diagnosis, treatment and general management of Crohn’s disease. Especially, there has been discrepancies in the quality of diagnosis and management of Crohn’s disease according to areas in Korea. Therefore, there has been a need for nationwide clinical network for Crohn’s disease to elucidate the characteristics of Crohn’s disease in Korea and to enhance the quality of diagnosis, treatment and general management of Korea. In this study, nationwide research network of Crohn’s disease involving 43 gastrointestinal specialists was established. Through this network, we analyzed the epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of Crohn’s disease and its long-term prognosis were investigated. We also improved the level of awareness for Crohn’s disease among doctors through the network and established the milestone for better management of Crohn’s disease at the national level. This network should be continued to elucidate the longer-term course of Korean patients with Crohn’s disease and to improve the quality of management of Crohn’s disease in Korea.
