For a long time, China and South Korea have share close geographical relations and built deep friendships. Under the guidance of the “Go Global" policy, many famous news sites have opened a Korean language section in order to let people from South Korea know more about the situation and claims of China, which shows the importance of Korean translation.
Newspaper editorial, as one of the basic genres of news, is highly valued by the news media. Therefore, it is often regarded as the heart of newspapers. Such a genre of news has its unique linguistic features and irreplaceable roles. People's Daily is one of the most influential newspapers in China and the newspaper editorials on it have attracted many readers with their distinct opinions, deep analysis and global viewpoints. It is of practical significance to tell the story of China and to create a good image of China through newspaper editorial translation.
However, low-quality translation will adversely affect the reading experience, and even more destroy the smooth communication between the two countries. Readability is one of the criteria for judging the quality of translation, so improving the readability of newspaper editorial translation is a task worth studying in depth.
This study consists of five chapters. The first chapter emphasizes the importance of newspaper editorial translation and explains the study background and purpose. Also it sorts out the previous studies related to the translation of newspaper editorial and readability theory. Chapter Two presents the theoretical background of this study. It summarizes the translation status of newspaper editorial and systematically introduces the readability theory. The Third chapter translates 20 newspaper editorials about social phenomenon into Korean by using the readability theory. Chapter Four puts forward 8 corresponding translation strategies for increasing the readability of newspaper editorials from vocabulary and syntax aspects. The last chapter is the ending of the study, pointing out the findings and limitations of the research.
