The poetic world and literary-historical significance of Ju Yohan have often been explained primarily through “Bulnori,” conventionally regarded as one of Korea’s earliest examples of free verse and prose poetry. Yet Ju’s poetry cannot be fully accounted for by this single poem alone; rather, it requires a more nuanced reading in relation to the other works collected alongside it. In this respect, Beautiful Dawn (Areumdaun Saebyeok) published by Chosŏn Mundansa in 1924, which gathers poems published in the 1910s and 1920s, provides not only a foundational basis for understanding Ju Yohan’s poetic world but also evidence of the poet’s own intention to present the volume as a unified whole devoted to singing the “self.” “Bulnori,” too, must be situated within this larger context. This article therefore calls for a reassessment of Ju Yohan’s literary-historical significance through a volume-based reading of Beautiful Dawn.
The defining feature of Beautiful Dawn, a collection of sixty-six poems arranged in seven sections, is the polyphony of the lyric subject, the poetic “I.” This voice cannot be reduced to any single category — romantic, symbolic, class-based, popular, vitalist, narrative, or lyrical — but instead forms a chorus that encompasses all of these at once. What has often been dismissed as awkwardness or heterogeneity in the diction of the poetic “I” should, in Ju Yohan’s case, be understood as a deliberate arrangement that loosens the rigidity of the modern subject and refigures the self as a symptom of modernity.
This polyphony does not, however, dissolve into meaningless variety or subjective chaos. Rather, the volume is structured by a shared problematic: an engagement with jeong (情) and its movement, together with an implicit effort to organize affect through means distinct from the traditional lyric grammars of classical Chinese poetry, sijo, and gasa. The collection’s seven sections repeatedly reconfigure how jeong is formed — through aesthetic will, love, nostalgia, vitality, praise, and private lyric response to concrete reality — thereby revealing a sustained attempt to renew lyric form. Read in this way, Beautiful Dawn not only demands a reevaluation of Ju Yohan’s literary significance but also offers an important point of entry into the study of modern poetic diction. In particular, it helps illuminate what kinds of language came to be recognized as poetic in the mid-1920s, and provides a productive reference point for comparing contemporary poets’ positions toward the Sinographic literary tradition.
