Bolting system is generally analyzed by simple FE model, where pre-tension is applied onto the bolt after tying the unthreaded surfaces of the male and the female screw parts. This ‘pre-tension’ method provides meaningful results in axial direction of the bolt without a laborious modeling of the bolt thread. However, the results in circumferential direction by ‘pre-tension’ method show no validity because of the tied boundary condition itself. For example, circumferential deformations around the tap hole are far from the actual once. This paper presents an indirect FE analysis method for the tapped female screw part to avoid the aforementioned problem by combining a detailed 2-D FE analysis results and a more simplified 3-D FE analysis. An example to demonstrate the validity of the suggested indirect FE analysis method is also presented.
