영국 청교도 영성의 한국교회의 수용 가능성에 대한 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

영국의 청교도 운동은 유럽의 개신교 정통주의 신학에 생명을 불어 넣었고, 영국 국교회의 로마 가톨릭적 잔재를 청산하는 새로운 종교 운동이었다. 한국 개신교의 신앙과 깊은 연관이 있는 청교도 영성을 탐구하는 것은 오늘날 한국교회 영성 형성을 논하는데 많은 도움이 될 것이다. 청교도 운동이 가진 영성적 특징을 다양하게 해석할 수 있지만 필자는 세 가지 패턴으로 분류하여 분석고자 한다. 첫째는 역리적 상승 패턴(illogical ascent pattern)이다. 청교도 영성 형성에는 영적 진보의 개념은 있지만 진보의 마지막인 연합(union)이 최종적 목적이 아니라 영적 삶의 시작이고, 과정으로 나타난다. 그러므로 청교도 영성은 칭의로 거듭난 신앙이 하나님과의 지속적인 관계 그 자체를 지향하는 영성이다. 둘째는 지성적 카타페틱 패턴(intellectual kataphatic pattern)을 가지고 있다. 청교도 영성은 설교, 성경묵상, 숙고, 자아성찰 등의 방법으로 하나님과의 관계 유지에 깊은 관심을 가진다는 점에서 지성적이다. 그리고 하나님께 나아가는 영적 상승의 과정에 언어와 이미지를 사용한다는 의미에서 카타페틱적이다. 이러한 점은 동양 종교가 추구하는 무념이나 공의 세계에 떨어지지 않고, 하나님의 말씀의 탐구와 하나님의 형상으로 주어진 인간의 지성에 기초를 둔 영성임을 말해 준다. 셋째는 금욕적 율법주의적 패턴(ascetic nomistic pattern)이다. 청교도는 하나님의 율법에 복종하는 영성을 추구했다. 그들은 일상 가운데 어떻게 영적인 생활을 할 것인지 매뉴얼을 가지고 있었다. 이와 같은 청교도 영성의 특징을 분석하여, 청교도 영성의 한국적 수용 가능성을 찾고자 한다. 이러한 연구는 사막 교부영성, 그리스 정교회 영성, 로마 가톨릭 영성이 혼재한 한국교회에 프로테스탄트 영성 훈련의 새로운 형태를 제공하므로 기독교 영성학과 한국 신앙인들의 영성 형성에 중요한 역할을 할 것이다. 이것을 위해 먼저 경건과 영성의 관계를 해명하므로 청교도 경건이 곧 영성임을 밝힐 것이다. 그리고 청교도 영성이 역사적으로 어떤 사상의 영향을 받아, 어떻게 형성되었는지 그 배경과 과정을 분석할 것이다. 나가가 청교도 신학자들의 사상을 통해 청교도 영성의 본질을 분석하여 청교도 영성 형성의 특징적 유형을 밝혀 낼 것이다. 마지막으로 청교도 영성 형성의 특징적 유형을 통해 한국교회의 영성 형성에 기여할 점을 제안할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Many scholars have studied the core concepts of the spiritual formation in Puritanism. In particular, Brauer’s analysis of Puritanical spirituality can be classified into the following four patterns- Lawful spirituality, Gospel-led spirituality, Rational spirituality, Supernatural spirituality. However, the author would to like to suggest the following three characteristics of Puritanical spirituality in Britain by referencing a numerous classifications of spirituality observed in the Christian traditions. They are Illogical ascent pattern, Intellectual kataphatic pattern, and Ascetic onomastic pattern. Through these unique characteristics, the paper will explore the possibility of accommodating the Puritanical spirituality in Korean Churches. Firstly, the illogical ascent pattern has the principles of progressive spirituality within the spiritual formation of Puritanism. However, it’s conclusion is that the union, which is the end point of progress, is not the ultimate goal but a beginning of the spiritual life and the journey that ensues. Therefore, Puritanical spirituality shows that the faith born out of justification supports the continuing relationship with God. Secondly, the intellectual kataphatic pattern suggests that Puritanical spirituality maintains the relationship with God through methods like sermons, bible studies, and self-reflection. It is kataphatic because languages and images are used in the spiritual ascension towards God. Such spirituality does not fall within the ideals pursued by the Eastern religion such as impassivity and justice, rather, it helps form oneself through the words of God and by using the human intellectual capabilities given by God when he created humans in his form. Thirdly, the ascetic onomastic pattern demonstrates the spirituality that obeys the laws of God. Puritans have a manual for their every day living to help them live a spiritual life. For those who follow the laws of God, it is important to know how to control the innate human desires. These three patterns of Puritanical spirituality will play important roles in the spiritual formation within Korean churches. Firstly, there is no danger for christians to fall into the traps of nature mysticism or Oriental mysticism during the spiritual formation stage. Secondly, we will continue to strive towards living a spiritual life without becoming arrogant and complement in our faith. Thirdly, we will not fall into the emotional spirituality but aim for a balanced spirituality when rational and emotions aspects come to harmony. Fourthly, instead of falling into the world of justice and nothingness which dominate the Eastern religions, we will have a spiritual mindset with a clear and defined object of our faith, God, the Holy Trinity. Fifthly, We will find the route to a spiritual life in God’s words. Sixthly, we will live a humble life as a Christian through self-restraints. Lastly, we will live a healthier spiritual life through the study of traditional Christian spirituality. Therefore, Puritanical spirituality within Korean ideology and culture, will help promote spirituality that will strengthen Korean Christianity.
