한국 수출전선의 첨병, ‘상사맨’의 등장과 ‘신화’ = Frontline Soldiers of Korea’s Export Drive: The Emergence and Myth of the Sangsaman

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 1970~1980년대 수출을 주력으로 삼은 한국 산업화과정에서 새롭게 부상한 종합무역상사의 세일즈맨, 곧 상사맨에 대하여 살펴보았다. 상사맨의 등 장부터 이들에 대한 사회적 조명은 어떠한 계기로 어떻게 이루어졌는지, 이를 통해 이미지화된 ‘상사맨’을 두고 사회와 기업은 무엇을 강조하고 활용하였는지, 나아가 이는 어떻게 변화되어 나갔는지, 또한 실제 상사맨의 삶과 활동은 어떠 하였는지 등을 살펴보았다. ‘상사맨’은 당대 자본-기업의 특화된 조건과 필요에따라 호명된 주체이자 결과적으로 한국 자본주의사회의 능력주의와 경쟁을 가속 화·당연시하는 데 중요 역할을 담당했다.

This study examines the emergence and evolution of the sangsaman (상사 맨)—salesmen working in general trading companies who rose to prominence during Korea’s export-driven industrialization of the 1970s and 1980s. It explores the conditions that led to the rise of the sangsaman, how they came under public attention, and how their image was constructed, emphasized, and strategically utilized by both corporations and society. The study further traces how this image evolved over time and compares it with the lived realities and work experiences of sangsamen themselves. As subjects shaped by the particular demands of capital and enterprise during this transformative period, ‘sangsamen’ ultimately played a key role in normalizing and accelerating meritocracy and competition in Korean capitalist society.
