Recently, as the voice of the thirst for psychological intervention for infertile women who perform In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer and the necessity of psychotherapy in the field of infertility treatment increases, the special infertility hospitals that is performs the art therapy is increasing. However, studies of art therapy reflecting the characteristics of infertile women performing In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer, particularly medical art therapy performed at infertility hospitals, are lacking.
Therefore, this study places the need for research on that aware of the absence of the above study on art therapy and understand the lived experience of art therapy for infertile women who perform In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer reflecting the stream of time in infertility treatment and the phenomenon of in infertility medical sites.
The purpose of this study was to describe in detail the vivid contents that infertile women is being experience in opportunity of art therapy session and to explore their various experiences so that establish what is their original nature and meaning. This study provides basic data to medical staff of infertility hospital, art therapists of medical field, art therapy education specialists, art therapy supervisor so that it will be possible to increase understanding about infertile women in In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer and to suggest the direction in which art therapy can be effectively applied.
In this study, with application of Max van Manen’s Hermeneutic Phenomenological Methodology, the four steps of that are the first, focusing on the nature of the lived experience, the second, exploration of realistic experiences, the third, hermeneutic Phenomenological reflections, the fourth, hermeneutic phenomenological writing and the subdivided eleven steps of research procedure belong to each step were faithfully performed.
Participants in this study were women who experienced group art therapy, individual art therapy, or art therapy performed in two forms while performing In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer in A, B, C hospitals located in Seoul, and it consisted of total 7 women who aged 30 to 43 years and participated in a minimum of 7 sessions and a maximum of 36 sessions of art therapy.
The data of study was collected from June, 2018 to August, 2018 through1:1 in - depth interviews on the art therapy experience of the infertile women who perform In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer from 7 people.
As a result that analyses the date through Max van Manen’s Hermeneutic Phenomenological Methodology, the total of 10 essential themes and 29 sub-themes were derived as follows:
<Started with art therapy in order to get sympathy and to seek help to hard heart, rather than interest in art>, <Feel that I did never take care of my mind at all to in order to succeed in the hard procedure that has progressed focused to the body, through art therapy>, <Through the listening and empathy of art therapists, emotions are expressed and sorrow is assuaged>, <As became interested in materials and became absorbed in art work, I was felt happy and comfortable>, <In group art therapy, I feel universality of pain for infertility and receive comfort>, <There were also some uncomfortable feelings in the group art therapy session>, <Taking care of my mind through group art therapy, I can take care of other people's pain>, <Through art therapy, I rediscover myself and became check my inner strength >, <Feels that art therapy performed by a familiar infertility hospital helps in the process of infertility treatment>, <I think art therapy gives me the courage to start again after failing of In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo>
The conclusions of this study on the art therapy experience of women with infertile women who perform In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer based on the existential subject, hermeneutic phenomenological writing, and discussion are as follows.
First, art therapy for women with infertile women who perform In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo transfer leads to expresses the oppressed emotions of the infertile women and to strengthens the self, and to discovery of the inner strength.
Second, the women who perform In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer experience to reach a positive emotional state by gaining the universality of psychological difficulties particularly in infertility treatment and expanding it to altruism.
Third, in the event that infertile women who perform In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer fails in procedure, the psychological difficulties can be overcome by art therapy and it gave courage to restart the infertility treatment.
Forth, when the opportunity of art therapy has been provided by hospital which is perform In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo, the infertile women experience psychological help from art therapy as psychotherapy combined with procedure treatment.
When reflecting on the research questions raised by the researcher through these four conclusions, the art therapy for infertile women provides psychological therapy for the women as medical art therapy, and for infertility hospitals, it has the meaning that can function as an alternative supplement, and ultimately, there is an essential meaning to deal with life.
This research on the lived experience of art therapy in the infertile women who performs In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer contributes to the academic aspect and the field of art psychotherapy as follows.
First, this study provided specific and useful data to medical practitioners of the hospital, the art therapist, the art therapy educator, and the art therapy supervisor in the medical field about that the art therapy become establish the complementary medicine for women who are in the process of In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo.
Second, by clarifying the therapeutic specialties and the meaning and nature of art therapy for infertile women who perform In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo, the necessity for continuous and careful psychotherapy intervention for infertile women who perform In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo Transfer was vividly suggested.
Third, In the situation where there is not enough research on the art therapy of the infertile women who performs In Vitro Fertilization-Embryo, it is meaningful in that the performance of this study contributes to the academic field of art psychotherapy.
