This study focuses on how the bass drum sound of the TR-808
drum machine, developed by the Roland Corporation in the 1980s, has
evolved beyond a simple rhythmic source to become a melodic
instrument in music of the 2020s. Although initially dismissed by the
mainstream music industry, the unique timbre of the TR-808 eventually
became a central low-frequency sound in genres such as hip-hop, trap,
pop, and K-pop. Throughout this process, technical features such as
decay, tone control, and pitch modulation, as well as tools like digital
audio workstations (DAWs), virtual instruments, and sampling techniques,
have collectively contributed to the expanded functionality of the
TR-808, depending on the interpretation of each creator.
In particular, digital music production tools have enabled more
precise manipulation of the TR-808 bass drum’s acoustic characteristics,
allowing the 808 sound to develop from a mere percussive hit into a
core component that forms pitch and melody. In the music of the 2020s,
the 808 sound is no longer confined to a single instrumental function—it
now operates as a central medium of sound design and plays a leading
role in shaping the emotional tone and structural flow of a track. This
transformation illustrates how the function of sound can be fluidly
restructured in music production practices through the interplay of
technology, creativity, and sociocultural contexts.
This shift is understood not as a mere result of technological
evolution, but as a process of reconfiguration shaped by creators and
sociocultural environments. To analyze this phenomenon, the study draws
on three theoretical frameworks: Greg J. Smith’s theory of the
"mutable object," Mark Fisher’s concept of "hauntology," and the
Social Construction of Technology (SCOT). These frameworks provide
perspectives on how the meaning of technology is constructed, how past
sounds are repurposed in the present, and how technology is interpreted
through social practice—each closely tied to the sound analysis in this
thesis.
Methodologically, this research employs a hybrid approach combining
technical analysis, practical production analysis, case studies, audio data
analysis, and the use of AI tools to comprehensively examine the
expandability of the 808 bass drum sound.
Ultimately, the TR-808 bass drum has evolved from a simple
electronic percussion device into a foundational low-frequency design
language in contemporary music, demonstrating its potential as a melodic
instrument. This study suggests that sound sources can be redefined as
new creative tools depending on the creator's interpretation and
technological context, offering meaningful contributions to future
research and practice in sound design.
