The purpose of this article is to summarize the achie ve me nts of the late Professor Chung Doo-hee(1946-2013)'s research on the history of e arly Jose on Dynasty and to re vie w what his re se arch me ans in acade mia today. Throughout his life, he studied various topics on the entire history of the Joseon Dynasty, but his early research activities were particularly focused on clarifying the nature and political management of the ruling forces in the early Joseon Dynasty.
For this study, he mainly used a methodology to objectively prove macro trends by building a large amount of historical materials into a database. Based on the data he built and interpreted, he criticized the academic convention of explaining the history of this period. In particular, he criticized the claim that the leading forces of the founding of the Joseon Dynasty originated from the Newly Risen Literati Class at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, and the popular belief to understand the political confrontation between Sarim(士林) and Hungu(勳舊) as a political struggle between different social classes. In his book, Censorial System of the Joseon Dynasty, he struggled to correct the existing view of Sarim. He argued that Sarim had the same social background as their political rival, Hungu, through an analysis of the censorate officials, which was said to be a representative example of Sarim in King Seongjong's reign.
This criticism of the nature of the Sarim forces claimed by Jeong Doohee is gaining consent from many researchers today. However, discussions are still underway on many issues, such as how to define the Sarim beyond criticism and how to view the relationship between the central and rural areas in the process of forming the Sarim. Looking back on Jeong Doo-hee's research at this point is expected to contribute to promoting this discussion
