창발적 이원론은 데카르트적 이원론을 극복하였는가?

국문 초록 (Abstract)

스마트(Smart)와 플레이스(Place)의 심물 동일론(identity theory)의 쇠퇴 이후에 심리철학(Philosophy of Mind) 내에서는 다양한 이론 및 입장들이 등장하였다. 그런 흐름을 타고 데카르트의 후계자들이 새로운 형태의 실체 이원론을 모색하기 시작했다. 데카르트의 실체 이원론(substance dualism)은 인간을 신체와 생각하는 것(thingking thing), 즉 물질적 실체와 정신적 실체(mental substance)의 결합체로 봄으로써, 인간의 정신적 영역의 실재성을 이론적으로 옹호하고자 하였다. 그러나, 20세기에 급속도로 발전한 신경과학은 영혼이나 정신적 실체를 가정하지 않고도, 인간의 정신적 능력 및 현상들의 많은 부분을 과학적으로 설명할 수 있다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 그런 이유로 데카르트의 비물질적 실체가 자연 내에 들어설 자리를 점점 더 좁히고 있다. 뿐만 아니라, 데카르트적 이원론(cartesian dualism)은 두 상이한 실체가 어떻게 서로 접촉하며, 인과적 영향을 주고받을 수 있는지에 대해 설득력있는 대답을 제시해주고 있지 못하고 있다. 윌리엄 해스커(William Hasker)는 데카르트적 이원론이 직면한 이러한 난국을 창발 이론을 통해 타개하고자 한다. 해스커는 물질적 토대 요소로부터 새로운 실재(entity)가 창발되며, 그 새로운 실재는 그것의 물질적 토대 요소들로 환원되지 않는 새로운 형태의 인과력을 행사할 수 있다는 새로운 아이디어를 선보였다.
본 논문은 해스커의 창발적 이원론(emergent dualism)이 과연 데카르트적 이원론의 난점들을 잘 극복하고 있는지를 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 논문에서 데카르트적 이원론이든 창발적 이원론이든, 실체 이원론은 해결될 수 없는 ‘인과적 상호작용의 문제’에 직면하게 되거나 아니면, ‘정체성의 위기’에 직면할 수밖에 없음이 드러날 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

After the decline of the identity theory of Smart and Place, various theories and positions emerged within the Philosophy of Mind. With such tide, the successors of Descartes began to seek a new type of substance dualism. The Cartesian substance dualism regards human as the combination of flesh and thinking thing, or the combination of physical substance and mental substance, to theoretically defend substantiality of mental domain of human. However, the neuroscience, which was rapidly developed in the 20<SUP>th</SUP> century, has indicated that many mental abilities and phenomena are explainable scientifically without introducing spirit or mental substance. Therefore, the Cartesian immaterial substance is losing its footing within the nature. Moreover, the Cartesian dualism may not suggest a convincing answer to how two different substances make contact and affect each other. William Hasker is willing to come up with a solution for such adversity of Cartesian dualism through the Emergent Dualism. Hasker brought this new idea that a new entity emerges from the physical foundational element, and this new substance may perform a causal power of new type that may not be returned back to a physical foundational element.
This thesis is to review whether the Emergent Dualism by Hasker overcomes the adversity of Cartesian dualism. In the paper, the actual dualism, either Cartesian dualism or Emergent dualism, may have to face the problem of causal interaction or the crisis of identity.
