      The writer have tried to find out the solutions as to what, what level, and how to teach in the education of ancient novels.
      As a result, as for what to teach, the writer asserted that the development of literary competence as well as the teaching and learning of literary competence as well as the teaching and learning of literary works should be focused on.
      About what level to teach, generative theory, struturalism, reflectional theory, receptive theory, etc. are thought to have to be consulted.
      Concerning how to teach, firstly, students should be divided into several leveled small groups according to students' achievement level. Secondly, teachers and students should choose leveled assignments for study in the given text through discussion. Thirdly, teaching and learning method should be turned from teacher-centered one to that of the sharing of role between teachers and students. At this time, the role of students is required to be directed to the self-centered and self-led study through discussion and presentation of small groups, while the role of a teacher is demanded to be that of a guide or and adjuster to be able to induce interest of students and promote the study effect.
      The practice in the teaching and learning of ancient novels in this paper is expects to be referred to for the more specific process.
