The purpose of this study is to examine the cases where Korean enterprises requested fashion designers for uniform design, confirm synergy effects that were created from the combination of designer's ideas with company identity, and analyse its design characteristics. For research methods, the cases where Korean enterprises requested famous fashion designers for uniform design in the uniform design field were investigated and analyzed from 2000 to 2011. Research data were collected by researcher's direct interview and review of previous researches, academic journals, books, internet, and weekly or monthly magazines on related areas. Uniform design cases between famous designers and enterprises considered in this study were classified by job category(airlines, bank, distribution, construction, communication, restaurant, beauty, and other industry). Finally, the following results were obtained.
First, airlines is a medium of delivering its image, as well as a symbolic medium of recognizing each country's image to the world. In this sense, Korean Air Lines requested world famous Italian designer, Gianfranco Ferrè for uniform design by using a Korean beauty looked from foreigner's view and airline's unique flying image. Asiana Airlines requested Jin, Taeok for uniform design and presented a functional design of knit materials. Air Busan requested Ji, Choonhee for uniform design and reflected CI color to express an enterprise image.
Second, as regards bank, Woori and Hana Bank worked in cooperation with Jung, Kuho and presented functional and simple designs which employees can work comfortably on the basis of bank's CI image. On the other hand, SC First Bank also requested Jung, Kuho for uniform design, however it presented a modern and refined uniform design actively using symbolic color and emblem of the bank. Korean Exchange Bank requested Andre Kim for uniform design to enhance the image of global financial group. It showed a trendy uniform design case which revealed designer's originality by using red and blue as point colors based on white and navy colors. Shinhan Bank requested Lee, Sangbong to focus on raising the image of professional financial company to clients using blue and navy, which are the symbolic colors of the bank, as basic color. Kookmin Bank Financial Group requested Andy & Debb in 2011 and reinforced the professionalism and trust of finance by changing a main color from yellow to dark brown.
Third, as regards distribution, Lotte Avenuel Department Store requested Kang, Jinyoung for uniform design and developed a unique design with an exclusive image of the department store. Hyundai Department Store contributed to the heightening of the image of the store by designing an original and young style uniform with Ji, Choonhee. Galleria Department Store requested French uniform company 'Creation & Image' and showed a unique and distinctive design which could not see in Korea before.
Fourth, as regards the construction business, they showed uniforms by fashion designers under the judgment that staff's images influence brand trust. Samsung C&T Co. requested Andre Kim and designed a uniform of expressing designer's strong individuality, breaking down an ordinary uniform design. Daelim Industrial Co., Ltd. and Ji, Choonhee used CI symbolic color and patterns for a uniform design to reinforce the brand image of 'e-easy life'. Hyundai Development Company and Masaru Mineo made a model house uniform of a simple and modern one-piece dress using black chiffon in harmony with a modern concept of I-Park Apartment.
Fifth, as regards communication, SK Telecom requested fashion brand Obzee for uniform design. It used orange color(CI symbolic color) as a point color with a refined stripe blouse and a knit vest to enhance functionality and symbolism at the same time. KT requested Kim, Bora, a new fashion designer, to appeal a fresh image of Olleh KT. It gave variety as a casual style, breaking down the existing suit style and diversified items to wear for all seasons.
Sixth, as regards the restaurant business, UNO suggested a uniform which consisted of various primary colors and styles and different accessories suitable to different duties with Jang, Kwangho. Fast-food restaurant McDonald's designed its uniform in a more quality and functional direction with Yoon, Wonjeong to remove a fast-food image and enhance quality and trendy food culture.
Seventh, as regards to the beauty industry, SK-II requested Jung, Kuho and designed a feminine one-piece dress uniform using dark red and white color which was it's brand color. Amore Pacific Aritaum presented a pink knit uniform which enhanced its brand image of seeking for clean and clear skin with Andy & Debb.
Finally, as regards other enterprises, W Walkerhil Hotel changed uniform designl with Babara Battaglini and Jung, Wookjun and gained public favor with a unique and united design with modernity and activity using Korean beauty. Kyobo Book Centre requested Lee, Sangbong for uniform design and presented a uniform jacket with Hangul patterns printed, enhancing the company's philosophy. Wooridul Hospital also suggested a functional and easy uniform considering the special environment of a hospital with Kim, Jina. Woonjin Coway Co., Ltd. requested Hanbok designer Lee, Younghee and showed a very desirable uniform design which expressed the clear and cool of water purifier and considered activity and Korean beauty. CGV in the movie industry requested Hong, Seonghwan and presented a uniform design which focused on functionality and convenience but cared about a fashion style. Finally, Ford Korea and Choi, Hejung, Choi, Hyungwook, and Jung, Jaewoong produced a showroom model uniform which was practical and refined to express Ford's identify of motor car brand. This study is very significant that it provides basic informations of uniform design satisfied by both enterprises and wearers, and suggests the future direction of enterprise uniform design.
