      This study deals with Paul Ricœur's hermeneutic of history and civilization. Paul Ricœur's hermeneutics emphasizes the text more than previous German hermeneutics. For Ricœur, "to understand a text is also to understand oneself in front of the text" (Comprendre un texte, c'est aussi se comprendre devant le texte). This hermeneutic is in line with the spirit of Coram Deo. In other words, one reflects oneself to God in front of the Scripture. However, the objects of hermeneutical inquiry and philosophical reflection for self-understanding are not limited to written texts. Objects and events in the world can also become objects of interpretation and trigger self-reflection and understanding. In order to understand history and civilization, Ricœur considers them as 'objects of interpretation' and applies hermeneutic methodology to study them. History is composed of objective sources and subjective accounts. Being mindful of the gaps in the three layers of time in history, Ricœur suggests that we should be wary of bad subjectivity and seek the truth of history. He also argues that Christians should look for hidden "meanings" in history. Based on an eschatological view of history, Ricœur argues that there is no despair in the sinfulness of history, but rather "meaning" and "hope. Christians, he says, must take an active social responsibility for civilization. We must fight demonism and reinvent Christian forms and values so that human civilization can pursue the right values. Ricœur distinguishes but does not separate secular history from sacred history. Ricœur's view of history is based on the Huguenot belief that God is sovereign and at work in secular history and is the master of history.
