Mar Aba became Catholicus, the supreme Christian leader of Sassanid Persia, in 540. He taught at the school of Nisibis, and from 525 to 533 he visited Alexandria, Constantinople, and Aden in the Eastern Roman Empire. He lectured on Exodus at a Nestorian monastery in Alexandria. Following the tradition of the School of Antioch, he argued that the tabernacle in Exodus was a model of the universe in a literal sense, so the earth was flat. After listening to his lectures, Cosmas wrote Christian geography, claiming that the earth was flat.
It is possible that Mar Aba met John Philiponos. He interpreted the Bible as an allegory against Mar Abba and accepted the Bible interpretation of Alexandria, which accepted Greek astronomy, and refuted the view of the Antioch School by claiming that the earth was round. Therefore, Mar Aba's visit to Alexandria triggered a dispute between the Antioch School and the Alexandria School about the meaning of the tabernacle as a model of the earth. In addition, Mar Aba saw the model of Greek philosophical schools through his visit to Alexandria and contributed to the development of the Nisibis school in that direction. Thus, while Mar Aba visited Alexandria, he made an important role to the exchange between the Persian and Alexandrian churches.
