This thesis is a research on whether the evkklhsi,a in Acts 5:11 and 9:31 was used to reveal the historical origin or the nature of the church. The thesis first reconsiders the ekklesia in 5:11, which is first mentioned among the 23 ekklesias mentioned in Acts, based on the context (Acts 1:1-6:7), and then studies on the ekklesia in 9:31, which summarizes Acts 6:8-9:31 and specifies the subject. First, Paul R. Trebilco claims that the author of Acts first uses ekklēsia in 5:11 to inform the historical origin of this title and reveal the nature of the church. It was the Hellenistic Christians who began to reveal the identity of the Jerusalem church as the people of God in the light of the Septuagint. In particular, in 9:31, where several churches are mentioned, intentionally referring to the singular “the church” emphasizes unity as a nature of the church. G. H. van Kooten opposes Trebilco, who suggests the origin of the Septuagint of the ekklēsia, and puts more weight on the author’s intention of the book of Acts to have continuity in the background of the civic community of Greek cities. The author of this paper suggests that Luke emphasizes the one church as the new covenant people contained in the ekklēsia rather than the historical origin of the ekklēsia. Second, ecclesia of 9:31 plays an important role in clarifying the meaning of ecclesia in Acts, as it is mentioned in two small summary verses(Acts 9:31; 16:5) in the central part of the book of Acts. In particular, a small summary verse (9:31) highlights the identity of the ecclesia as one of the important key words, establishing the identity of the church not only through the unity of the church, but also through the active voice indicating the responsible action of the ecclesia and the divine passive voice indicating the leading action of God.
