This paper examines the current criteria for selecting philosophical texts in middle and high school Classical Chinese textbooks and suggests the criteria for the next text edition. Through the survey, this study summarizes the standard for selecting philosophical texts in the current middle and high school Classical Chinese textbooks into five category: 1. passages including representative key ideas 2. passages that can cultivate sound sense of value and build students` upright character, especially in the form of typical sayings and set-phrases 3. passages showing typical grammatical points 4. passages that can stimulate students` interest, including fables or historical facts 5. passages that can induce students` active participation and creative learning. Based on the current standard, this study suggests that criteria for the next text edition as followed: 1. The text materials should be extracted suitably so as to meet for an learning goal. 2. The text materials including negative meaning should be excluded. 3. The text materials including some abstruse philosophical conception should be minimized. 4. Grammatical points should be provided with systematic approach with each stage. 5. The textbook authors should continue to search for fresh text materials.
