The purpose of this study is to identify the attitiudes of parents toward the contemts and timing of sex education.
In this study, advanced attitude of parents was assumed to be related to the practice of sex education in a relatively wider scope.
For this study, 728 parents, with their children aged 12∼13, from tqo elementary schools located in the areas of different cultural levels were investigated in regard to their attitudes toward the timimg and contemts of sex education.
Its major findings are as follows;
1. More than half of the parents turned out to have conservative sttitude toward the timing of sex education. 29% or 873 parents out of 2912 subjects investigated showed liberal attitude while 53% or 1566 parents gave negative response and the remaining 18% were not decided. Having related the findings to some independent variables, such ones as parents' economic status, occupation, educational level, religion and the number of children were found to be statistically significant. Advanced views increased in proportion to the parents'economic status, educational level and the number of children, the employees of Public officak showed the most advanced view on this question.
Religiously, catholics and christians gave the most positive response.
2. Toward the contents of sex education, 43% or 2060 responses out of 4398 answeres obtained indicated advanced views toward the content of sex education, 38% conservative and the remaining 16%, not decided.
Having related the findings to indepandent variablesm the results very similar to those of the timing of sex education werew obtained. Foreign studies revealed that the parents abroad have very advanced view on the timing and content of sexx education, while this study proved that Korean parents have extermly considerstive tendency. They showed very strong inclination to cover up the problems related to sex.
It will be certainly more difficult to practice sex education in this atmosphere than abroad. In view of what procedes, it is recommended that efforts should be made to change the attitudes of parents toward this.
