In today’s competitive environment, interfirm cooperation to gain new knowledge is a fundamental element for firm growth and survival. In particular, from the perspective of search theory, absorbing external knowledge and disseminating internal knowledge both involve search activities. While prior research have little considered the direction of knowledge flow or focused on a certain direction of the flow, this study clearly distinguishes the directions of knowledge flow into knowledge inflow and outflow and analyzes how they affect firm value. The analyses of technology licensing and financial data in high tech industries show that the balance between local and distant searches for the knowledge inflow and outflow enhances firm value. This study further shows that market dynamism moderates the effect of knowledge flow on firm value. The results of this study suggest that firms need to consider the direction of knowledge flow in the interfirm network for technological and product development.
