Reflexive Verbs in Russian and Polish and the Nature of the Lexicon = 러시아어와 폴란드어의 재귀동사와 어휘적 성질에 대한 고찰

Reflexive verbs are morphologically different in Russian and Polish: in Russian the reflexive morpheme - sja is fused morphologically with the verbs itself, whereas in Polish it is a separate syntactic element, a free-standing pronoun się, which can appear in various places in a sentence. Nevertheless, the functions of reflexive verbs in Russian and Polish are strikingly similar. This article surveys the ways in which these functions are served by the two morphological types of verbs.
A unified analysis is proposed under which similar functions can be achieved in both languages if the presence of the reflexive morpheme in Russian is due not to additive morphology, but if it is instead the result of a subcategorization requirement specified in the lexicon on a non-reflexive base verb. It is shown that this can unite the “circumfixal” formations in both languages, combinations of a verbal prefix plus the reflexive morpheme with distinctive meaning associated only with this combination.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

러시아어 재귀동사와 폴란드어 재귀동사는 형태적으로 상이하다. 러시아어의 경우 재귀 형태소 -sja가 형태적으로 동사와 하나가 되는 반면, 폴란드어의 경우 재귀 형태소 się는 그 위치가 자유로운 통사적인 문장구성성분으로서, 문장 내에서 다양한 위치에 나타날 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 러시아어와 폴란드어의 재귀동사의 기능은 상당히 유사하다.
본 논문에서는 러시아어 재귀 형태소가 첨가의 개념이 아닌 하부범주의 결과라는 개념을 제시한다. 이러한 접근은 두 언어의 접어 형성과정, 즉 동사에 첨가 되는 접어와 재귀 형태소의 조합을 동일한 현상으로 볼 수 있다는 가정을 가능하게 한다.
