Concerns and expectations have been raised about the preservation and transmission of the pavement landscape when converting palaces and altars in Korea and China from forbidden gardens to open public shared places. Therefore, this study aims to trace the origin of the pavement landscape culture of East countries and provide a new perspective for the study of palaces and altar. In order to achieve these objectives, eight representative palaces and altars in the Joseon Dynasty and the Ming and Qing Dynasties were selected to conduct a systematic investigation of the pavement landscape of the two countries. Literature survey, field survey and questionnaire survey were used to conduct the investigation. First, a systematic literature review was conducted to find out the origins, construction materials, construction methods, and design patterns of Korean and Chinese pavement landscape. Then, landscape images and preferences were statistically evaluated by using 24 pictures of the pavement landscape as an evaluation medium. Finally, the cognition characteristics of the Korean and Chinese palaces and altar paving landscapes were compared. The main results of the study are as follows.
First, the pavement landscape of the palaces and altars of both countries can be divided into four types: royal road pavement, garden road pavement, yard pavement and garden road facilities pavement. In terms of construction technique, the two countries both adopt a method of compacting the soil at the bottom, covering with mixed mortar, and paving various paving materials with sand, lime, etc. on the surface. This shows a common point in the paving techniques of the two countries.
Second, differences exist in paving materials and patterns according to the levels of palaces and altars in the two countries. In Korea, royal road was built by two materials: thin stone(薄石) and granite. The royal road in front of palaces and altars as ceremonial or court meeting space used thin stone, and the royal road in front of palaces as living space mostly used granite. The form of royal road is a three-segment type with a high middle part and slightly lower edges on both sides. The connecting parts of three segments are all separated by curb stones(緣石). While paving the garden road, wide pavement is mainly distributed at the entrance and exit of the palace, while the narrow pavement is distributed across the palace and courtyard. The paving material is mainly made of decomposed granite soil(花崗土), and in some cases, concrete is used in the process of maintenance and repair. In some cases, coir mat was used to pave the road, a plant material that matches the surrounding environment to prevent loss of decomposed granite soil. Except for the main courtyard is paved in thin stones, the rest of the courtyard are all composed of decomposed granite soil, tiles, and taegeuk stone(長台石) and natural stone(自然石) are used for the hwagye(花階) and weoldae(月台) paving.
On the contrary, the royal road in China has a huge stone slab in the middle and cyan bricks(青磚) on both sides. It has a three-segment form with a curb stones at the junction of three segments. The paving styles of the garden road are diverse, with square bricks in the middle and cyan bricks, changiparangga(鵝卵石), broken tiles on both sides. The yard is often paved with a lot of cyan bricks. It should be noted that the Tiantan Park(天壇公園) uses concrete and permeable bricks due to its extensive repairs, which is not in harmony with the surrounding environment. Valuable paving materials such as Chinese white jade(漢白玉) and celestite(文葉青石) are used on the weoldae of the Forbidden City and the Danbi(丹陛) of Tiantan Park.
The difference in paving materials between the two countries is due to the different geographical environments. In the Joseon Dynasty, palaces and altars were mainly located beside mountains and near rivers, so they could take the advantage of the abundant resourses of granite and decomposed granite soil of Bukak Mountain(北嶽山). The use of these materials from Mt. Bukak is in line with the aesthetic awareness of the country, which values environment and harmony. Dashiwo area(大石窩) near Beijing during the Ming and Qing periods produced a lot of Chinese white jades and celestite, and there were many kilns for baking cyan bricks in the vicinity, so there was an advantage of supplying these materials.
Third, differences also exist in paving patterns between the two countries. Korea's paving patterns are divided into regular quadrangular patterns and irregular paving patterns. The places with irregular paving patterns are the royal road and courtyard of Gyeongbokgung Palace(景福宮), weoldae of Tongmyungchun(通明殿) in ChangKyungkung Palace(昌慶宮), the weoldae and courtyard of the Jeongjeon(正殿) and Yeong’nyeong-jeon(永寧殿) in Jongmyo(宗廟). In addition, it is difficult to find irregular paving patterns in other regions.
In contrast, China's paving patterns are relatively diverse. The paving patterns on the royal roads and trails consist of two parts: the corridor and the Sanshui(散水). The corridor is paved with large slabs and bricks, and the Sanshui has diagonal cross willow leaf pattern(斜十字柳葉紋) and diagonal cross steep plank pattern(斜十字陡板紋). There are also paving patterns such as cross willow pattern(十字柳葉紋) on the ground of the courtyard. The garden road facilities are paved in the form of coins and auspicious clouds, showing rich symbolic meanings. There are about 900 pebble paintings in Uhwawon(禦花園) of the Forbidden City. The stone pavement of the Round altar(圜丘壇) in Tiantan Park is a multiple of the number 9, which is a relatively special paving method in palaces and altars.
Korea’s paving pursues a sense of simplicity, while China's paving adds a lot of artificiality and symbolism. However, the two countries both show a concept of hierarchy in paving patterns, which can be used to distinguish the architectural space hierarchy. From this point of view, two countries are influenced by Confucian ideology(儒家思想).
Fourth, differences in preferences for paving landscapes are analyzed according to the differences in age, gender, nationality, education, and occupation. Through one-way ANOVA analysis, the correlation coefficient between these variables and the preference of landscape image was analyzed, and it was found that the preference of paving landscape is slightly different according to different gender groups. There is no difference in the preference of pavement landscape according to age.
Fifth, in order to understand the correlation between the awareness, attention, importance of the pavement landscape and the preference for the image of the pavement landscape, one-way ANOVA analysis was conducted. The results showed that awareness, attention, importance of the preferences of the pavement landscape have a high correlation with `coordination', `regularity' and `symbolism'.
Sixth, through a T-test analysis, it was found that the average values of people's preferences for the landscape of palaces and altars between Korea and China were different. Similarities could be found in only two evaluation indicators of `harmony - disharmony' and `sense of unity – sense of disunity', and there are great differences in other evaluation indicators. Korean pavement present the images of `monotonous', `natural', `simple' and `gentle', while Chinese pavement present `complex', `artificial', `gorgeous' and `hard' images. The reason for this difference is that the using of paving materials in Korea pursues a spirit of nature; however, in China, the paving materials for palace pursue a relatively complex, artificial and gorgeous feeling.
Seventh, the study analyzed the factors of preference for the image of the pavement landscape in the two countries. The results show that in Korea, there are mainly five factors, while in China, there are six factors. China's pavement landscape images emphasize spatiality and uniqueness, because the image of China's pavement landscape is relatively complex and unique.
Eighth, the study also explored the influences of preference factors on pavement landscape preferences. The results showed that the coordination and aesthetic factors of the two countries have great influences on the overall preferences of the pavement landscape image. It is necessary to keep these two factors in mind when renovating the landscape of the palace and altar pavement in the future.
