The basic intent of this study is to clarify the causes and shapes of attitude difference between rural and urban people in our country which is undergoing rapid industrialization and urbanization. It is assumed that, as major social influences which bring fourth the attitude difference, the urban and industrial impact play a great role. Under this assumption four groups──industrial workers and farmers in urban and rural areas──were sampled for a comparative analysis.
The summary of the research findings along with the problems raised is as follows. First, according to the result of the comparative analysis, it is made clear that the modernity of attitude is more related to the occupational background of industry-agriculture rather than to the residential background of urban-rural. It is indicated that with respect of the impact of education, there is a correlation between the level of education and that of attitudinal modernity. Therefore it is expected that the improvement of education level will perform a significant function in the process of modernization.
Second, though it is assumed that the attitude and value have both the resistance aspect and conformance aspect toward the social influences, the detailed result is that the resistance aspects vary according to the given social influences.
Third, the characteristics of attitude revealed by the four groups is summarized as follows. With respect of residential areas, no distinctive attitude difference between urban and rural people is found, as has been mentioned earlier, except that urban people are more individualistic and rural people are more communal. The attitude difference betwen industrial workers and farmers is much more remarkable, and the rural farmers' group and the urban industrial workers' group represent the both poles of traditionalism-modernism of attitude.
Fourth, irrespective of residential and occupaional background, all of the four groups reveal relatively high rate of modernity though there is some difference in the degree, which suggests that industrialization, urbanization, and education will contribute much to the modernization of men, and then to the modernization of society.
