『잘 자요, 엄마』의 제씨의 자살에 관한 분석 = A study on Jessie`s suicide in "night, Mother"

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 마샤 노먼의 『잘 자요, 엄마』(night, mother)에 대해 아리스토텔레스의 『수사학』에 나온 정념의 정의를 바탕으로 제씨의 ‘감정’을 분석하여 그 자살의 의미를 찾아보고자 하였다. 『잘 자요, 엄마』는 1983년 퓰리처 상을 받은 미국의 여류 극작가 마샤 노먼의 작품이다. 이 희곡은 딸인 제씨의 자살 선언으로 시작하여 그녀의 자살을 막기 위한 엄마 델마와의 대화로 이루어져 있다. 마샤 노먼은 제씨의 죽음에대해, 자신이 바라는 것을 아무 것도 가질 수 없다고 생각하는 그녀에게 마지막으로 남아있는 자기 조절 문제를 용기 내어 움켜쥐는 것이라 설명한다. 이 희곡에 대한 많은 연구도 제씨의 자살을 ‘주체성의 주장, 자아 추구’등의 용어로 제씨가 자신의 존재감을 주장하기 위한 선택이었다고 분석하고 있다. 본 연구자는 이에 덧붙여, 제씨의 ‘감정’에 초점을 맞추어 희곡을 분석해 보았다. 감정은 인간이 생존하기 위해 필요했기 때문에 발달한 것이며, 이는 타인이나 사회 등 세상과 맺는 관계와 관련이 있다. 자신이 처한상황과 대상에 관해 어떻게 의미를 부여하느냐에 따라 각기 다른 감정 반응을 보이는 것이다. 결국 감정을 이해한다는 것은 그 사람에 대해 이해한 제씨는 자신의 존재에 대해 의문을 가지고 스스로 상실한 자기 자신에 대한 화두를 가지고 있다. 이에 본 연구자는 실존적 감정이라 일컬어지는 수치심, 죄책감, 두려움(불안)을 바탕으로 제씨가 어떻게 다른 사람과 관계를 맺고, 실존적 감정들을 자극받아 왔는지 살펴보았다. 그리고 제씨의 자살을 자신의 인격을 보호하고 자신의 존재를 주장하기 위한 ‘분노’ 표현으로 이어지는 과정을 살펴봄으로써 제씨의 자살의 이유와 그 결심의 타당성을 감정의 흐름을 통해 이해하였다. 그녀는 두려움이라는 감정 대신 수치심과 죄책감을 깊이 경험하며 그것이 내재된 분노로 인해 자살을 유일한 희망으로 받아들인 것이다. 제씨가 ‘자기 존재, 자신의 주체성’을 주장하기 위한 분노의 방식으로 자살을 선택한 것이라면, 역으로 그녀가 살기 위해서는 자신이 있는 그대로 받아들여지는 경험이 필요했을 것이라고 볼 수 있었다. 다시 말해 자신의 감정에 대한 관점의 전환이 필요했던 것이다. 그랬더라면 제씨에게 필요했던 ‘사랑과 희망’을 발견할 수 있었을 것이라고 생각한다. 본 연구를 통해 삶의 의미에 대해 어떻게 바라볼 것인가 하는 의문으로부터 출발하여 결국에는 ‘삶과죽음’은 맞닿아 있으며 ‘죽고 싶다’는 말은 ‘잘 살고 싶다’는 말이었음을 새삼확인할 수 있었다. 또한 자살 행위에 이르는 감정의 흐름을 살펴봄으로써 ‘죽음’의 희망 대신 ‘삶’의 희망을 찾도록 하는 가능성을 탐색하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning of Jessie’s suicide in Marsha Norman’s ‘night, Mother’ by analyzing her emotions based on the definition of passion from Aristotle``s 『Rhetorics』. ‘night, Mother’ is a play of American playwright Marsha Norman who received the Pulitzer Prize in 1983. It begins with the Jessie’s announcement of suicide and consists of the conversation with her mother Thelma to prevent suicide of her daughter. Marsha Norman explains that the suicide is for Jessie to grasp courageously the power of self-control, because she believes that she cannot have anything she wants. Many researchers conclude that Jessie’s suicide is her choice to assert her strong presence in terms of ‘claim of identity, inquiry of self’. In addition, I analyze it focused on the ``emotions`` of Jessie. Emotions are developed and transformed in needs of human being’s survival, so they have something to do with the relationship of the world such as others or society. We respond each other in different emotions, according as the way to give meaning to our situation and objects. After all, to understand the emotions can be seen as understanding of the personality. Jessie has doubts about her presence and has a topic for lost herself. Therefore, I examined how she made relationship with others by the stimulation of feelings based on so called existential feelings; shame, guilt and fear. And I understood the reason of her suicide and its validity through the flow of emotions from protecting her personality to asserting her presence by expressing ‘anger’. She experienced the feeling of shame and guilty deeply rather than fear, so she accepted suicide as the only hope by the inherited anger. Jessie has chosen to commit suicide in the way of anger for claiming ‘self existence, her identity’, But I thought on the contrary that she would have needed to experience to be taken herself as is. In other words, she needed to switch the view on her emotions. Then she would have found ‘love and hope’, necessary for herself. Starting from the question of how to look for the meaning of life in this paper, I found that ``life and death`` was in contact with each other and "I want to die" was saying “I want to live well.” I examined also the possibility to find the ‘hope of life’ instead of that of death in pursuit of the flow of emotions reaching to the very act of suicide.
