The purpose of this study is to find out whether the cultural stress of foreign university students affects the self-respect and university life adaptation of foreign university students and whether there is a mediating effect of interpersonal relationship in the influence of cultural adaptation stress on self-respect and university life adaptation of foreign university students.
This study set up the following research problems.
1) Does the general characteristics, cultural adaptation stress, and interpersonal relationships of foreign university students affect self-respect and adjustment to college life?
2) Does the cultural adaptation stress of foreign university students affect self-respect and adjustment to university life?
3) Does the interpersonal relationship of foreign university students affect the self-respect and adjustment of university life of foreign university students?
To verify the above research problems, they are foreign university students attending five universities, including Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Yonsei University, Gangnam University, Namseoul University and Yongin University in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province and South Chungcheong Province. A total of 600 copies of the questionnaire were distributed to foreign university students attending five universities, including cultural adaptation stress scales, self-esteem scales, interpersonal relations scales, and university life adaptation scales that included general characteristics of international students. A total of 532 questionnaires were collected and 511 students were selected as the final analysis targets after excluding 21 parts that contained inaccurate responses.
In order to collect data from 5 universities from May 30 to June 29, 2020, researchers visited 5 universities and collected questionnaires to verify the hypothesis, they used the SPSS 22 and AMOS 22 programs, and analyzed as follows:
The findings of this study are as follows.
First, a Descriptive Analysis was conducted to identify the general characteristics of foreign students, stress on cultural adaptation, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, and degree of adaptation to college life.
Second, t-test and ANOVA were conducted to identify differences in cultural adaptation stress, self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, and university life adaptation according to the general characteristics of foreign students.
Third, the Multi-Return Analysis was conducted to find out the cultural adaptation stress and the impact of interpersonal relationships on the self-respect of foreign university students and their adaptation to college life.
The results of this study show that foreign students staying in Korea are influenced by self-respect and university life adaptation due to the stress of cultural adaptation. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop a psychological health promotion program for foreign students staying in Korea.
