무호 백성욱의 불교사상과 수행법 = Muho Baek Seong-uk's Buddhist Thought and Practice

This paper examines the life, Buddhist philosophy, and practice methods of Muho Baek Seong-uk (無號 白性郁, 1897–1981). Baek Sung-wook is the first Buddhist scholar in Japanese colonial era to study in Germany and earn a doctorate, and he introduced Western Buddhism to Korea along with Kim Beop-rin, who studied in France. He was an independence activist and Buddhist scholar, a politician and educational administrator who lived a colorful life of non monk and non layperson.
In commemoration of the 120th anniversary of Dongguk University, this study explores Baek Seong-uk’s thought and contributions as one of the foundational figures in the university’s Buddhist tradition, alongside Seokjeon Park Han-young and Manhae Han Yong-un. In line with this purpose, Baek Sung-wook's life and thoughts were critically reviewed. In particular, it introduced the research results on Baek Sung-wook, which has been greatly activated since the establishment of the Baek Sung-wook Research Institute in 2018, and revealed that there is an aspect of mythologizing Baek Sung-wook in existing research. Through these considerations, Baek Sung-wook's contributions to the Buddhist tradition of Dongguk University were revealed, and the characteristics of his Buddhist ideas and practices were revealed.
