오인된 ‘카르노스’의 노래 - 설정식 시의 윤리적 주제의식과 그 시적 형상에 대한 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 설정식 시에 나타나는 윤리적 인식의 특징과 문학적 형상 간의 관계를 살피는 데 목적이 있다. 정치적 현실을 윤리적 정당성의 관점에서 파악하는 설정식의 사유는 해방기 다른 좌익계열의 시인들과 그를 구분 짓는 특징이라 할 수 있다. 윤리를 도덕과 분리시켜 이해하는 그는 한 사회의 정신적 질서란 윤리적 전통으로부터 형성되며 문화적 개성의 보유는 윤리의식의 성숙도에 따라 좌우되는 것으로 인식한다. 인간 주체가 실천해야 할 보편윤리의 정립은 모든 사회 공동체에 요청되는 과제인바 그에게 정치권력의 정당성은 마땅히 윤리적 정당성을 근거로 판단되어야 할 문제이다. 따라서 그의 문학적 물음은 ‘윤리적으로 정당하지 않은 권력이 정치적으로 정당할 수 있는가’로 요약된다. 그가 해방기 조선 사회의 제일의 과제로 윤리적 주체의 형성을 제시한 것도 이러한 논리에 따른다.
그는 우선 당대가 요구하는 민족문학의 수립은 문학가의 양심과 그 실천에 의해 가능한 것으로 본다. 이 때 양심은 민족 자체를 윤리적 판단의 대상으로 파악하고 자기 민족의 죄악을 성찰할 수 있는 내적 비판의식을 뜻한다. 토마스 만의 ｢마의 민족｣은 그러한 양심이 실행된 예로 설정식은 이 글의 번역을 통해 민족의 자유를 ‘책임’의 내면화가 요구되는 윤리적 과제로 환원한다. 그의 시에 나타나는 제국주의 비판의 핵심도 윤리와 도덕을 망각한 민족은 정치적 힘을 잘못 행사함으로써 ‘마의 민족’으로 전락하고 있고, 자신의 죄악을 돌아볼 줄 모르기 때문에 그 어떤 정치적 정당성도 주장할 수 없다는 사실에 모아진다. 그의 시는 스스로를 반성하지 않는 정치권력의 팽창이란 타민족의 희생을 당연시하는 파국적 우화에 불과하며, 민족의 악덕은 어느 민족에게서나 나타날 수 있기 때문에 조선 민족 또한 예외일 수 없음을 강력히 경고한다.
그의 시에서 윤리적 주체 형성의 요구는 두 가지 방향으로 나뉜다. 하나는 윤리적 주체의 자기 정립이며, 다른 하나는 새로운 윤리적 공동체로서의 인민의 창출과 기획이다. 전자는 ‘아모스’와 ‘카르노스’의 예언으로 상징되는데 신의 분노를 대리하는 전지적 선지자 ‘아모스’가 조선의 현실을 경계하기 위해 의도적으로 차용된 목소리라면, 광기의 예언자 ‘카르노스’는 진실한 말로 민족의 앞날을 계시하지만 오해의 비극을 피하지 못할 것을 예감한 시인 자신의 목소리에 해당한다. ‘아모스’와 ‘카르노스’의 동시적 공존은 설정식의 시인으로서의 자기-이미지가 두 형상 사이에 분열되어 있고, 둘은 거듭되는 자기 부정의 관계에 있음을 암시한다. 한편 후자는 민족과 인민을 경계 짓는 데서 출발한다. 민족의 악덕을 직시할 때 민족의 재생과 구원이 가능하다고 보는 설정식의 관점에서는 만약 민족이 불의하다면 그러한 불의를 극복할 수 있는 정의로운 ‘우리’의 무리가 민족 내부에서 솎아져야만 한다. 인민은 그렇게 민족 안에서 분화되는 ‘다른’ 공동체로서, ‘가난하지만 의로운’ 이들에 의해 구성되며 민족의 역사를 쇄신할 새로운 주권적 공동체로 상상된다. 그의 시에 구현된 인민의 형상은 자기를 ‘홀로’ 세우는 단독자이되 집단을 이루기 위해 배타적 동화를 강요하지 않는, 서로의 주체성을 지키면서 ‘우리’를 수호하는 다중(多衆)의 모습을 띤다. 민주주의가 위기에 처할 때면 언제든 다시 소환되는 이 다수성의 이미지야말로 설정식 시의 가치를 영원히 현재적인 것으로 만든다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between his ethical perception and literary shape that appears in Seol Jeong-Shik"s poems. Seol"s idea of grasping political reality from the perspective of ethical legitimacy is a characteristic that distinguishes him from other left-wing poets in Emancipation Period(1945-1950). He perceives that a society"s mental order is formed from ethical traditions, and cultural personality depends on the maturity of ethical consciousness. For him, the establishment of universal ethics is considered a task for all social communities to solve. He also thinks that political legitimacy is a matter to be judged based on ethical legitimacy. Therefore, his literary question can be said, "Can power that is not ethically justified be politically justified?" Based on this logic, he suggests the establishment of an ethical subject as the first task in Chosun society.
He believes that national literature of the time can be established only when a literary man practices his conscience. The conscience of a literary man refers to a consciousness that can criticize the sins of one"s own people by seeing their own people as objects of ethical judgment. Seol presents Thomas Mann"s German and German people as an example of such conscience being practiced. Through the translation of this article, he reveals that national freedom is inextricably related to a sense of responsibility. The main content of imperialism criticism in his poem is that a nation that forgets ethics and morality cannot claim its political legitimacy because it becomes an ‘evil nation’ by misusing political power and does not know how to reflect on its sins. His poem strongly warns that the political power that does not reflect on itself is merely a foolish story that takes for granted the sacrifice of other peoples, and that the Chosun people cannot be an exception because the evil of the people can appear in any nation.
The formation of an ethical subject in Seol’s poem takes on two aspects. One is the self-establishment of ethical subjects, and the other is the creation of people as a new ethical community. The former is embodied through the prophets Amos and Carnus. Amos, who conveys God"s revelation instead, is a voice intentionally borrowed to warn of the current situation in Chosun and the possessed Carnus is the voice of the poet himself who predicts the future of the nation in a sincere language but predicts that misunderstanding cannot be avoided. The coexistence of the two voices suggests that the self-image as a poet is divided between the shapes of the two prophets. The latter begins with the distinction between the people and the nation people. The people are other communities that differentiate within the nation people. This community is imagined to be a new sovereign community that is formed by the poor but righteous and will renew the history of the nation. In his poem, the people are embodied in multiple that are independent but do not force exclusive identification to each other for forming a group.
