The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of father’s parenting involvement perceived by mother on the social morality of children and investigate the relationships between social morality of children and father’s parenting involvement factors.
We set research questions based on the purpose of this study as follows.
Is there any difference in father’s parenting involvement by the characteristics of father and characteristic variables of family? Is there any correlation of father’s parenting involvement perceived by mother with the social morality of children? Does father’s parenting involvement perceived by mother affect the social morality of children?
228 children at ages of 3-5 enrolled in childhood education institutions (daycare center and kindergartens) located in Nowon-gu, Seoul and Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province, their mothers and teachers were selected as subjects for this study.
26 questions were selected from the scale of ‘generative roles of fathers who have children’ developed on the basis of results of studies of Snarey (1993) and Palkovits (1997) by Yee, Young Hwan, Lee, Jin Sook and Cho, Bok Hee (1999) in order to measure father’s parenting involvement. Questionnaires used to examine the development of morality of children developed by Morisige Satosi (1998) and studies on Japanese mother’s parenting attitudes in some scenes from the daily life conducted by Shuto Satoshimoto and Ninomiya Katsumi (2002) modified by Choi, Soon Ja (2005) were used to examine the social morality of children. Frequency analysis, reliability analysis, T-test and ANOVA were performed and multiple regression analysis was performed.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, there were some differences in father’s parenting involvement by characteristics of fathers. For incomes, there were some differences in activities together with their children. For working hours, there were some differences in developmental support, caring and guidance of children and activities together with children that were sub-factors of father’s parenting involvement.
Second, father’s parenting involvement had a positive correlation with social morality including developmental support, caring and guidance for children and activities together with children, and moral areas such as sanctity of life, honesty, sharing and cooperation. It had a negative correlation with violent actions. In addition, it had a positive correlation with conventional areas such as order, rules, etiquette and frugality.
Third, the effects of father’s parenting involvement on the social morality of children were significant in morality areas which were sub-factors of social morality. The sanctity of life was significant in activities together with children.
Honesty and violent actions were significant in developmental support.
Sharing and cooperation were significant in developmental support and activities together with children. These factors were also significant in conventional areas. Order and courtesy were significant in activities together with children. Order was significant in developmental support.
