유럽통합연구의 새로운 분석틀 = 영국학파(The English School)에 대한 비판적 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은'영국학파'(the English School)가 유럽통합연구를 위한 분석과 설명에 기여하는 정도를 가늠하고자 한다. 1950년대 말, 훗날 영국학파로 알려지게 되는 집단이 국제관계에 대한 이해를 돕는 급진적인 대안을 제공하는 연구프로그램을 발족하였다. 영국학파는 마틴 와이트에 의해 "합리주의"라고 명명된 연구추세에 따라 국제사회에 대한 아이디어를 통해 무정부상태를 극복하고자 한다. 이를 통해 영국학파는 궁극적으로 그리스 도시국가, 중세 유럽 그리고 냉전시대와 그 이후를 모두 다룰 수 있는 몰역사적인 분석틀을 제공하고자 한다. 이에 이 글은 영국학파의 이론적 성취를 설명하고 아울러 이에 대한 비판적 분석을 시도한다. 특히 설명의 폭을 좁혀 유럽통합연구를 위한 영국학파 이론의 적용과 그 결과에 초점을 두고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article is mainly concerned with the question as to what extent the English School may serve to analyse and explain the European Integration. At the end of the 1950s, a group of individuals who came latter to be known collectively as the English School began to develop a research programme which offers a radical alternative to established thinking about international relations. The English School is situated in the current that was named "rationalism" by Martin Wight in that it overcomes anarchy through the idea of international society. As such, the English School tries to providing an effective ahistoric framework that can be applied across time to analyse international systems as different as the Greek city states, Medieval Europe, the Cold War confrontation and beyond it. This article is a presentation and critical analysis of the theoretical achievement of the English School, with particular consideration being paid to its approach to the European Integration Studies and its outcomes.
