휘문고보의 고시엔 야구대회 8강 진출의 역사적 의미 = The Historical Meaning of Hwimoon Middle School’s Qualification of Quarter –Finals in Koshien Baseball Championship

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 휘문고보가 1923년 펼쳐진 고시엔 야구대회 8강에 어떻게 진출하게 됐는지 분석하는 데 있다. 학교 측의엄청난 재정적 지원과 수준 높은 야구 코치는 휘문고보가 위업을 이루는 데 공헌했다. 이 위업은 조선인들이 민족적 자부심을 고취하는 데 도움을 줬다. 또한 일본 언론은 휘문고보의 분투적 정신과 선이 굵은 플레이를 크게 칭찬했다. 휘문고보의 업적은 역사적 중요성을 가지고 있다. 조선, 만주, 타이완 팀의 경우 각각 조선인, 중국인, 타이완인 만으로 팀을 이뤄고시엔 대회 본선에 진출했던 팀은 없었다. 이런 측면에서 전원 조선인 선수로 구성된 휘문고보의 대회 본선 진출은 고시엔 대회 역사상 유일한 경우였다. 비록 후에 운동부 우선정책에 반기를 든 휘문고보 학생들의 동맹휴학으로 야구의 발전이위축됐지만 휘문고보의 고시엔 대회 8강 진출은 일본이 압도했던 조선 야구계에 큰 발자취를 남겼다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study attempted to analyze as to how Hwimoon middle school could reach the quarter-finals in the Koshien Baseball Championship held in 1923. A great deal of financial support, a large playing ground and a quality coach were combined to contribute the baseball feat of the Hwimoon middle school team. This sporting exploit helped the Koreans to inspire national conciousness. Also, the Japanese media highly touted the team’s fighting spirit and powerful play style. This achievement had historical significance. There was no Korean, Manchurian and Taiwanese team comprising of all Korean, Chinese and Taiwanese baseball players to qualify for the Koshien Baseball Championship. In this respect, the case of Hwimoon middle school composed of all Korean players was unique in the history of the Championship. Although the strike of its students stemming from their hostility towards its sport-first policy would undermine its baseball development, its baseball achievement left a big mark in Japanese dominated baseball world in Chosun.
