다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Recent discussion about the mental causation(MC) finds its impetus in Davidson. His theory of MC, the so-called “anomalous monism,” induced abundant philosophical discussion about explaining how MC is possible. However, it seems to me that he has never provided any concretely systemic definition of the nature of the strict law and any explanation of why causation is tied to the strict law. My main aim in this paper is to argue that although in explaining MC the nonreductive-based counterfactual account is not strong enough in some sense, it needs not be in need of the thick conception of causation and thus the property identity by critically discussing the counterfactual account, and the productive/generative account, of mental causation that were supported by Donald Davidson and Jaegwon Kim respectively. In so doing, I will argue that a version of event identity theory helps the counterfactual account explain the possibility of MC, which is untimately based on the regularity/nomologicality. Furthermore, my conception of event identity provides the best solution the problem of MC, avoiding both the problems of mental epiphenomenalism and exclusion principle Kim espoused. In this paper, I will not directly examine the well-known supervenience/exclusion argument: Instead I will look into the reason why Kim came to espouse the argument.

데이비슨은 정신인과에 관한 심리철학자들의 본격적인 논의를 촉발시켰지만, 엄격한 법칙이 인과관계를 보증한다는 그의 주장을 뒷받침할 만한 엄격한 법칙의 본성에 관한 체계적이고 구체적인 설명을 제공하지 않았을 뿐만 아니라 왜 인과가 엄격한 법칙과 함께 묶여있어야 하는가에 대한 명확한 이유도 제시하지 않았다. 이것은 이 후의 심리철학자들의 짐으로 남게 되었다. 이 논문은 주로 데이비슨 스스로도 그가 주장하는 엄격한 법칙이 지지해야 한다고 생각했던 정신인과에 대한 반사실적 인과의 접근방법과 이에 대응하는 김재권의 생산적/발생적 인과의 그것 간의 가장 최근의 논쟁을 비판적으로 논의한다. 그렇게 하면서 비록 정신인과에 대한 비환원주의에 기초해있는 반사실인과적 설명이 어느 정도의 약점은 있지만, 가장 최근에 김재권이 주장하는 것처럼 그것 때문에 두터운 인과의 개념이 필요하게 되고 그래서 속성동일론을 받아들일 수밖에 없는 것은 아니라고 주장할 것이다. 오히려 한 바람직한 사건동일론은 반사실적조건문이 궁극적으로 의존해 있는 규칙/법칙에 기초한 정신인과의 설명을 어느 정도 뒷받침하며, 이런 인과에 기초한 설명은 김재권이 주장하는 것처럼 정신부수현상론의 덫에 빠지지 않는다는 것을 보일 것이다. 더 나아가서 이 논문은 사건동일론의 핵심논점을 설명하여 만약 비환원주의자들이 이 형이상학적 기초를 선택하다면 김의 배제의 원리가 만들어 놓은 함정을 피할 뿐만 아니라 발생적 인과의 개념도 필요하지 않게 된다. 이것은 김이 제공하는 것 보다 더 안정적인 형이상학적인 그림이 될 것이다. 논문은 이미 널리 잘 알려져 일반화 되어있는 김재권의 수반논변 또는 배제논변—수반에 의존한 정신인과의 설명은 딜레마에 빠지게 된다는 논변—을 직접적으로 논의하지는 않는다. 대신 김이 이 원리를 고안하게 된 배경을 논의하면서 그것을 간접적으로 비판적으로 논의하게 될 것이다.
