워홀과 1964년 세계박람회, 그리고 영화 <엠파이어> = Warhol, 1964 New York World"s Fair and 〈Empire〉

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 워홀의 아르데코에 대한 향수와 <엠파이어>를 1960년대 세계박람회를 기점으로 본격화되었던 미국 사회의 변화상과 밀접한 관계를 지닌 것으로 다루고자 한다. 이러한 접근방식은 워홀의 작업과 1960년대 동시대 대중소비문화와의 관계를 보다 복합적으로 관찰할 수 있는 역사적 근거를 제공하게 된다. 또한 최근 전시를 통하여 각광을 받고 있는 워홀의 물질문화, 보다 구체적으로 말해서 워홀의 개인 컬렉션과 그의 작업과의 연관성을 살피는 계기도 마련하게 된다. 이를 통하여 워홀의 팝아트를 동시대의 코카콜라나 할리우드 스타들의 이미지에 축약시켜서 다루어온 방법론적인 한계를 극복하고 워홀의 1964년 <엠파이어>와 제작을 둘러싼 역사적인 배경을 통하여 미국의 자화상에 대한 워홀의 비평적인 인식을 살펴보고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines how Andy Warhol"s preoccupation with Art Deco style of the 1930s, which was popularized and revived during the New York World"s Fair in 1964, and Warhol"s <Empire> sheds a light upon the changing social terrains in the 1960s. This provides an important theoretical ground for studying Warhol"s work in a close dialogue with popular and subculture of the 1960s in the United States; it also utilizes Warhol"s personal collections of furniture and objects in explicating the thematic sources of Warhol"s oeuvre. Moving away from the prevalent approach toward Warhol"s Pop Art only to be associated with the iconic images of Coca Cola and Hollywood stars, 〈Empire〉 and it circumstances are used as important clues that can illustrate Warhol"s growing distance from the idealistic and prosperous self-image of the United States--amely "The Empire."
