Hwandan Gogi is a book that contains (well known, yet unfounded) arguments that Korea established a powerful country under Dan’gun’s leadership more than nine thousand years ago. Ever since a person named Yi Yu-rib published this book in 1979, its legitimacy and genuineness were continuously questioned. In this article, it is determined that Hwandan Gogi was indeed a false, forged publication, based upon the ‘existence’ of another person named Gye Yeon-su, who is known to have published Hwandan Gogi (supposedly) in 1911, earlier than Yi Yu-rib.
In some texts, Gye Yeon-su is recorded as the one who discovered Cheonbu-gyeong before 1945. In the 1960s he seems to have been the leader of the Danhak-hwe association as well as an Independence fighter. In the 1970s he appears as one of the leading figures of the ‘Nationalist Historiography’ and also publisher of Hwandan Gogi. Other than these, not much of his life is known to the public. And the singular record that supposedly validates his life and actions was Haedong Inmul-ji(1969), in which an association called Dandan Hakhwe appears, as an organization that inherited the late Danhak-hwe association to follow the teachings of a new religious school known as Taebaek-gyo (whose leader was also Yi Yu-rib). In other words, Yi Yu-rib and this Dandan Hakhwe were the very source of information for the Gye Yeon-su segment in Haedong Inmul-ji.
According to this segment, Gye Yeon-su had two colleagues and aides: Oh Dong-jin and Yi Gwan-jib(Yi Yu-rib’s father). Oh Dong-jin was a renowned leader in the Anti-Japanese Korean Liberation front of the 1920s, and had no actual relationship with Gye. Meanwhile, Yi Gwan-jib’s name is spotted from records about Gye Yeon-su, but Gye does not appear in records of Yi Gwan-jib at all. Yi Yu-rib seems to have invented the history and principles for Dandan Hakhwe and Taebaek-gyo, and the result was the fabrication of Hwandan Gogi and Gye Yeon-su.
