As the cases of overcoming various problems of global urbanization after industrialization have increased, global market pays attention to cultural industry. Since culture plays the role of a catalytic agent in the improvement of national competitiveness, culture-oriented regional revitalization can make a region affluent and therefore, its ripple effect seems to be great. In addition, culture can create a regional image or change it positively, and plays a crucial role in regional development and in the improvement of life quality of local residents who want to satisfy their cultural desires. But with the capital area-centered production and consumption of culture and art, which are caused by the current phenomenon of satisfying cultural desires, the cultural polarization has been intensified and all the local societies have come to realize that they have to play the leading role of culture. On this account, the need of carrying out studies on it has come to the fore.
Since the role of regions became crucial, the author paid attention to art creation studios, a new pattern of cultural/artistic facilities, as an alternative means of regional revitalization, and then sampled domestic and overseas successful examples of art creation studios which had different aims of founding and were proved to be effective in the sociocultural development of regions and in the creation of economic values as follows: ‘Cheongju Art Studio’, established by government in order to construct new cultural infra and share diverse culture and art with local residents: ‘Incheon Art Platform’ which introduced the experimental art of various genres using modern buildings in the era of Incheon’s port opening; ‘Chang-dong Art Village’ to which creative techniques of urban restoration were applied for the first time in Korea; ‘Le 104 (Le CENTQUATRE)’ in Paris, France, established by Paris’ creative policies for local residents; ‘Dashanzi 798 Special Art Zone’ in Peking, China, which was voluntarily formed by artists; and ‘Kanazawa Citizen's Art Village’, established to succeed regional traditional culture. And then the author analyzed the patterns of operation of these cases in relation to regional revitalization.
Study findings showed that in order to revitalize regions, art creation studios had to play the roles of experimental space for regional modern art, of cultural/artistic space for local residents, of educational agencies, and of community space. Based on these findings, developmental plans of regional art creation studios were presented.
Local artists must present new directivity of art through art creation studio-based experimental attempts, thus making local artistic circles grown to an international exchange space of modern art. Since the value of art creation studios as an important cultural infra will increase in the future, they must carry out studies on the development of unique programs and on their roles for other regions. The activation of regional art creation studios can develop local art and form the base of their growth to global art creation studios.
As cultural diversity and the importance of cultural/artistic education have increased, art creation studios of which number has increased in recent times must play their first generation role of providing the space of creation as well as their second generation role of program characterization-oriented expansion of space that can satisfy a variety of social requests. In addition, in order for art creation studios to play their third generation role of becoming a useful tool for the activation of regional community, it is necessary to establish a creative cultural environment through physical support, spatial composition and discriminated participatory operation.
