본 논문은 쿰란 공동체의 메시아사상을 연구하는 데 핵심적인 히브리어 māšîaḥ가 다양한 쿰란 문서에서 어떻게 사용되고 있는지 고찰한다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 히브리어 메시아를 포함하고 있는 13개의 쿰란 문서의 25개의 본문을 연구한다. 쿰란 문서에서 히브리어 메시아는 다양한 인물들, 구분되는 역할, 시기 등으로 나타난다. 쿰란 문서는 메시아에 대한 조직적이고 체계적인 사상을 제시하지는 않지만, 쿰란 메시아사상과 관련된 메시아 단어의 몇 가지 주요한 특징을 나타낸다. 첫째, 종말론적인 문맥 가운데 사용된 대부분의 메시아 단어는 한 인물에게만 주로 사용된다. 1QS에서 사용된 “아론과 이스라엘의 메시아들”이라는 표현은 종말론적 배경에서 유일하게 복수형으로 메시아 단어가 사용된 경우이다. 둘째, 미래의 상황에서 메시아의 등장은 종말론적인 시대가 되었음을 구분하는 경계가 된다. 그러나 메시아 단어가 나타나는 대부분의 쿰란 문서에서 메시아가 종말론적인 상황에서 어떤 특별한 역할을 하는지에 대해서는 구체적으로 알려주지 않는다. 11Q멜기세덱(ii:18)은 종말론적인 상황에서 메시아의 역할을 포함하고 있는 유일한 본문이다. 셋째, 쿰란 문서의 메시아 단어가 예언자적 인물들에게 사용되었을 때 대부분은 과거의 역사적 시대를 배경으로 하고 있다. 넷째, 메시아라는 단어를 마지막 때에 이스라엘을 회복시킬 다윗 계열의 메시아로 이해하는 이른바 ‘다윗적 메시아니즘’이 명확하게 나타나는 본문은 많지 않다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines how the Hebrew māšîaḥ is used in Qumran literature through the lens of Qumran messianism. The paper investigates twenty–five references of māšîaḥ in thirteen different Qumran scrolls. The Hebrew māšîaḥ refers to various characters, distinctive roles, and different numbers in each scroll’s literary context. Although Qumran literature does not present a systematic view of māšîaḥ, it exhibits certain dominant uses of māšîaḥ in relation to Qumran messianism. Firstly, most usages of māšîaḥ in the eschatological context apply māšîaḥ to a single messianic figure – either a royal Messiah, a priestly Messiah, or a royal and priestly Messiah. The expression “Messiahs of Aaron and Israel” in 1QS ix:11 is the only exceptional passage that employs the plural form of māšîaḥ in the eschatological context. In addition, prophetic māšîaḥ figures appear mostly in past eras rather than within the eschatological context. Secondly, māšîaḥ is important for the Qumran community in terms of the delimitation of the eschatological age. Otherwise, māšîaḥ in this particular time period and setting does not define any specific role of the Messiah. Messiah’s announcing of peace and salvation in 11Q Melchizedek ii:18 is the only passage containing a specific messianic role in the eschatological context.
