This study examines A Drifting Record of Chopuran Island of Taiwan with the goal of investigating the scholarly significance and research methods of “drifting records” (漂流記). Such records are valuable for raising issues such as the relationship between the individual and ethnicity, empire and tributary states, center and periphery, and the perception of a country’s boundaries through an individual’s actions economic activities of the East Asian seas and in maritime history.
In particular, drifting records from the lower class such as fishermen and sailors are far richer in description than those of literati envoys as they directly experienced such matters. However, as these literati wrote in their stead, their different world views overlapped and blended together after being told orally and translated several times. A Drifting Record of Chopuran Island of Taiwan describes the ecology of the aboriginals in the eastern part of Taiwan. Those in western part Taiwan and Chinese government officials on the coast were completely unaware of this ecology at the time. Comparing drifting records by those who drifted from Japan to Taiwan with those of Choson to Taiwan describing this strange ecology are thus valuable sources.
This study observes how the writer’s status and systemic interventions and changes through language and written characters converted these drifting records into knowledge. “Drifting records” became the foundation of how readers in other ages explored and analyzed migration and travel experiences, and are a source for studying the issues of premodern individuals’ statuses and subjectivities, as well as their worldviews.
