한흑구 작품에 나타난 미국 흑인문학 수용 양상

국문 초록 (Abstract)

재미한인 문학은 한국 근대 문학에서 볼 때 일본, 중국 등 다른 한인 문학과 비교해 양적인 면에서나 국내 문단의 영향력에서나 상대적으로 미약한 모습을 보여준다. 한국어와 영어가 동시에 능통했던 한흑구는 미국 이민 1세대로 번역과 창작을 병행하며 식민지 시대에는 드문 재미 유학생 경험을 하였다. 그는 미국 유학 생활 동안 많은 시·소설·수필·평론·번역 등의 작품 활동을 시도했다. 특히 여기서 주목할만한 작품들은 한흑구의 시선에서 바라본 미국 흑인문학이다. 한흑구는 미국 흑인문학의 저항성에 관심을 가지며 유색인종으로 차별대우를 당한 자신의 처지를 작품에서 드러내고 있다. 한흑구는 미국 유학 체험을 토대로 식민지 디아스포라로서의 자기 인식과 미국 내의 다양한 디아스포라를 통한 민족적 공통점과 이민 사회 내부에서 민족 정체성을 포기하지 않았을 때 어떤 주제가 생산될 수 있는지 보여준다. 또한 제국주의적인 미국 문학이 아닌 소수자 문학으로 미국 문학에 대한 탈식민적 인식을 확보한다. 본고에서는 한흑구가 당대 미국 흑인문학을 수용한 방식과 미국 유학 시절 창작한 문학작품을 통해 식민지인으로서의 정체성을 어떠한 방식으로 표출하고 형성해 갔는지 고찰한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Korean American literature, when viewed in the context of modern Korean literature, appears relatively modest in both volume and influence on the Korean literary scene compared to Korean literature from Japan or China. Han Heuk-gu, a first-generation Korean American immigrant fluent in both Korean and English, was a rare figure during the colonial era who engaged in both creative writing and translation while experiencing life as an international student in the United States.
During his time in the U.S., Han Heuk-gu produced a diverse range of works, including poetry, fiction, essays, critiques, and translations. Notably, his engagement with African American literature stands out, as he explored it through his unique perspective. Han was particularly interested in the resistance expressed in African American literature and reflected his own experiences of racial discrimination as a person of color in his works.
Drawing on his experiences as an international student, Han Heuk-gu demonstrated a self-awareness as a colonial diaspora and highlighted shared ethnic struggles across various diasporic communities in the U.S. His works also showcased the potential for thematic exploration when ethnic identity is maintained within immigrant societies. Furthermore, he established a postcolonial understanding of American literature, not as imperialist literature but as literature of minorities.
This study examines how Han Heuk-gu absorbed contemporary African American literature and how he expressed and shaped his identity as a colonial subject through his literary creations during his time as a student in the U.S.
