Christine M. Korsgaard"s Constitutional Model is worthy of notice in investigating the implications of action and agent and the relation of the two. The Main argument of Korsgaard"s Constitutional Model is that self-constitution is action itself. The purpose of this study is to examine what effect Aristotle has on Korgaard"s model and how well her reconstruction of Aristotle"s arguments work within her Kantian constructivism. Depending upon Aristotle Korsgaard insists that teleological organizations or functional arrangements bring about constitutive standards and those constitutive standards, in applying to our activities, serve as constitutive principles with a normative force. Korsgaard"s dependence on Aristotle is related to her understanding that both Aristotle and Kant see normative principles as constitutive principles. Such a understanding, however, does not fully reflect Aristotle"s positions. Korsgaard explains that self-constitution is an activity, and not a state. For Aristotle self-constitution is a state as well as an activity and so self-constitution is not action itself. It is thus somewhat different from Aristotle"s positions that normative principles for action are identified with constitutive principles for agents. There is another problem in Korsaggard"s project of getting Aristotle involved into her Constitutive Model. Korsagaard"s constructivist approach to normativity is a sort of proceduralism. On the other hand Aristotle"s conception of practical rationality is not only a procedural but also a substantive one in that it is related to the reasoning for eudaimonia, or living well. Thus Aristotle"s arguments on telos, function and good are at odds with her procedural constructivism. It shows that Korsgaard"s project does not work well as she expects.
