The Value and Utilization of Sangdang Fortress as Cultural Heritage

Gongju National University Graduate School of Cultural Heritage Major in Cultural Heritage
There are many fortresses left across the country, but 70% of Korea's land is mountainous, and most of the castles are fortresses. By efficiently building castles using rugged mountainous terrain, the fortress has been used as a means to maintain the reputation of the state despite enemy invasions because it is advantageous for topographical defense.
Sangdangsanseong Fortress was built as a fortress during the Three Kingdoms period, and was rebuilt as a stone structure in the 42nd year of King Sukjong's reign (1716) after several renovations. The current Sangdangsanseong Fortress is a representative cultural asset of Cheongju-si, providing a place for citizens to enjoy leisure activities and relaxation, and more than 1 million tourists visit every year. The fortress wall, where the entire section remains, is a great advantage of Sangdangsanseong Fortress, and it is still used as a walking course and has a view of the entire city of Cheongju. Meanwhile, the Hanok Village in Sangdangsanseong Fortress has been built as a restaurant since the 1980s and is a representative space that provides the citizens of Cheongju with the pleasure of food.
Meanwhile, research on the excavation and investigation of cultural properties is being actively conducted on Sangdangsanseong Fortress, and 4.2km of fortress repair is being carried out to restore the old appearance of Sangdangsanseong Fortress. In addition to the restoration, the restoration of historical sites such as Gwana (Unjooheon), Jangdae, and Foru are being planned. Until now, the policy on Sangdangsanseong Fortress has been mainly academic research and repair focused on archaeology. As restoration plans are mainstream, the utilization plans are somewhat inadequate and insufficient. The key to the issue of preservation and utilization of the historical and cultural environment is not only how it can be reproduced and passed on to the next generation, but also how it can be re-created in real life by utilizing the special values and meanings of cultural heritage.
This paper focuses on this and re-examines the historical values related to Sangdangsanseong Fortress, studies the historical story of Sangdangsanseong Fortress and how to utilize it in connection with cultural resources around it, and analyzes the use of other local fortresses to derive cultural property characteristics and competitiveness of Sangdangsanseong Fortress.
Various application plans should be sought and conceived, but in this study, the researcher intends to propose five very notable and relatively expected application values. To differentiate it from the use of cultural heritage implemented by other fortresses by presenting detailed and detailed plans for the target and personnel program (jeanor, material, method, target, and period) for each subject, we will study the use of unique cultural heritage that fully reflects the history and cultural value of Sangdang Fortress. Finally, I would like to summarize and present the effects and expectations of using Sangdang Fortress cultural heritage.
