Since the 21st century has started, the East Asian countries surrounding the Korean peninsula have been on armed race to maintain their influence among each other. Consequently, these military power nations are currently modernizing their military strength and increasing their strategic weapons. Nuclear weapons and guided missiles are common strategic weapons and are essential for achieving general military strategic purposes. However, for surrounding nations, these strategic weapons can be significantly threatened.
In this paper, strategic weapons of surrounding countries of the Korean peninsula, China, Japan, N. Korea and S. Korea, will be analyzed how much strategic weapons are developed and maintained. And then deterrence theory will be reviewed, along with the deterrence effect of nuclear weapons and missiles used
during and after the World War II. The deterrence effect of strategic weapons goes beyond winning war and aims for the survivability of its own nation and people. Lastly S. Korea’s counter measurement will be suggested respond to the threat of N. Korea‘s nuclear and missile weapons.
