〈허생전〉의 교육적 내용과 의의 = Educational subject matter and significance of 「Heo Saeng Jeon」

I selected the matter of what we should teach, and what significance the learners would get, teaching 「Heo Sang Jeon」.
It is Yeon-Am who left great achievements in the history of philosophy as well as that of literature. His pragmatic idea searching for utility value encouraged our country to turn medieval feudalism into modern civic society, and 「Heo Saeng Jeon」 is reflected by his pragmatic Idea. That's why learners' understanding the writer should come first for making out not only his works but also his status in philosophy. 「Heo Saeng Jeon」 is passed on various literature in the similar forms(tale of Heo Saeng). It's clear that this novel was written from the subject matter of original tale of Heo Saeng. And learners are required to understand the history of this novel.
It is the character's behavior from which any novels try to grab the meaning. Because the final value the character tries to search for is the main subject of that work. I brought out the meaning of main character of Heo Saeng's behavior, dividing his behavior with his commercial transaction, economic benevolence spreaded with people equally and economic, political, commercial, policy, etc. Eyen though 「Heo Sang Jeon」 is short story and these ideas are converged to the idea of pragmatism, it would be educational to analyze this for grasping real society and its criticism at that time. The matters of understanding the writer is absolutely important, old literature would offer the learners unusual reading experience, the writer's recognition of the society and the main character's aspiration for achieving it give a lot of ideas to those who live these days.
