구소련의 붕괴 이후 러시아는 전환기동안 급격한 사회구조적 변동을 경험했다. 시장경제와 법치주의로의 전환 와중에 기존 구소련 체제 하의 완전고용, 그리고 무료에 가까운 의료, 교육, ...

구소련의 붕괴 이후 러시아는 전환기동안 급격한 사회구조적 변동을 경험했다. 시장경제와 법치주의로의 전환 와중에 기존 구소련 체제 하의 완전고용, 그리고 무료에 가까운 의료, 교육, 주거 등으로 대표되는 사회복지체제는 사실상 소멸되고, 그 자리에 개인주의, 경쟁, 물질적 부의 획득이라는 자본주의적 이데올로기가 대신했다. 그 결과로서 사람들은 따라야 할 규범이 부재한 아노미적 상황에 빠지게 되었다. 러시아가 이러한 엄청난 규모의 전화기적 사회, 경제, 정치변동을 겪고 있는 동안에 과연 자살률에 변화가 있었는지를 살펴보는 것은 사회구조적 변동과 자살과의 관계에 관한 연구주제와 관련해서 상당히 의미가 있는 연구 작업이며, 러시아의 이러한 급격한 전환기적 사회변동은 동시대를 살고 있는 우리 연구자들에게 사회변동이 자살에 미치는 영향을 검증할 수 있는 살아있는 실험실을 제공한다고 할 수 있다.
이 연구는 러시아의 이러한 역사적 전환기를 기회로 삼아서 급격한 사회변동 요인들이 자살에 미치는 영향에 대해 검증해보았다. 뒤르켐의 아노미이론에 따르면 급격한 사회변동은 자살과 같은 일탈을 증가시킨다고 보았다. 이러한 뒤르켐의 아노미적 자살에 관한 논의의 검증을 위해 89개의 러시아 지역들로부터 다양한 인구학적, 사회통계학적, 사망관련통계자료들을 사용하였다. 회귀분석결과는 연구가설들을 어느 정도 지지할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 인구변동, 실업률의 변동, 빈곤율의 변동이 큰 지역일수록 자살률이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구결과를 토대로 전환기 러시아 사회의 급격한 사회구조적 변동이 자살률의 변화에 영향을 주었다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Durkheim argued that rapid social change would produce anomic conditions that, in turn, would lead to increase deviant behavior, including suicide. The dissolution of the Soviet Union resulted in radical and fundamental socioeconomic changes to Russian society. The Soviet Union's social welfare system and community oriented culture were replaced with capitalist economic system and individual ideology. This unique natural experiment provides a rare opportunity to examine the potentially disintegrative effects of rapid social change on suicide, and thus to evaluate one of Durkheim's key theses.
Using mortality data from Russian Ministry of Health and controlling for other structural covariates, I used OLS(Ordinary Least Squares) regerssion to estimate cross-sectional models using the Russian regions(n=78) as the unit of analysis. Regression results indicated that there is significant relationship between social change and suicide rates in Russia during transitional period.
The findings showed that regions exhibiting less the level of privatization were regions with greater increases in suicide rates, and regions that more strongly experienced population change, unemployment and poverty were regions with higher increases in suicide rates. These results confirmed the association between socioeconomic change and suicide in transitional Russia.
