The construction of multi-storey buildings is an objective necessity for the development of cities due to social requirements (time saving and convenience of the population) and optimization of urban planning characteristics (connection with transport, building density). Gradual transformation and enrichment of the silhouette of the city is possible with the creation of spatial landmarks in the form of multi-storey buildings, as significant objects that correspond to the scale of the city.
In this article a periodization of the emergence and spread of multi-storey construction in Novosibirsk (from the early 20th century to the present) consisting of six stages is proposed. These stages cover a mass transition from one type of multi-storey building to another, covering approximately a 115-year period of historical development in Novosibirsk. It is based on a detailed analysis of historical and archival materials. The main criterion for the periodization is the change in the number of stories in mass construction. These mass transitions corresponded to changes in strategic programs and tactical decisions in the development of the urban area of Novosibirsk, in line with historic periods and events.
