The major roles of facade are to attract consumers into a shop by visual effects and so to induce sales, the main purpose of commercial space. It is lighting that is essential to maximize such functions and attract consumers at night. Although the roles of facade as lighting at night is very critical, there are almost no researches on facade lighting in a commercia space up to now.
Accordingly, this paper proposed the lighting design plan depending on facade types in consideration of the features of each facade type through classification of facade types and case analysis on lighting design per facade type.
The facade types classified on the basis of various standards in the existing researches were reclassified around the items related to facade types in order to identify the facade types for lighting design. In other words, the functions of facade and building shapes in the functions and types of facades are excluded because they are not directly related to the lighting design. For facade types classified by facade forms, those with the similar meaning or duplicated types were integrated. Finally, 8 facade types were classified for lighting design; standard type; vertical type; horizontal type; flat type; round type; one side type; two-side type; and three-side type.
The case analysis on total 16 facade lighting designs was executed; 2 designs per type for 8 facade types. In other words, the standard facade harmonizes the front components and expresses functions and forms by repeating openings at regular intervals and has the basic composition of a window.
The horizontal facade emphasizes the horizontal components with flexibility and directivity and presents the clear division and horizontal directivity on each layer.
The flat facade finishes the front side with one outer cover and creates the unity only by lighting on the front side of a facade which people see, the whole building, by introducing a quantity of light inside or outside.
The round facade presents stability, flexibility and humanity and enables the expression of flexible forms because a facade uses a curve.
The vertical facade emphasizes the structural expression rather than brilliant look.
The one side facade is characterized by its location in a specific distance(walking distance) and it is on the first side of contact surface.
For the two-side facades, other surfaces as well as the standing surface shown from a main gate need to be considered unlike the one side facade in most cases. Thus, most two-sdie facades comprise local lighting on a corner or a whole building. This type can express the facade forms most effectively.
Unlike two-side facades which are installed on a corner of a building, the three-side facade is observed in a corporate brand shop as corner facade.
In accordance with the case analysis results on the lighting design per facade type, it was the two-side facade which was the optimum type to be applied in a commercial space as well as expressed the formative features of facades. Then, the standard facade type and 2-side facade type lighting design was executed. For the lighting design in standard facade type, the lighting fixtures of LED stick bar type were lined up along the crack between the frame and the glass of the window filling the front side of a shop, to create the linear lighting along the window frame. The lighting design using two-side facade type installed the lighting fixtures of LED bar type at the end of the finishing materials at the top of outer wall of a building for creating downward lighting. Then, the outer wall of a building seemed as a flat light source. LED flood lights were adopted as the accent lighting by emphasizing the material features of timber used as finishing materials at the bottom of the side.
This paper classified the facade types for lighting design depending on facade types in a commercial space. However, there are limits in analyzing facade types in accordance with the purposes of this study. Furthermore, there is the limit in applying the same facade designs because there is no design verification on lighting design plans and the lighting design varies on the site conditions and features of surrounding lights without respect to the facade types.
