This article analyzed Paloheonjip (八吾軒集) written by Kim Seong-gu, who served as governor of Jeongui-hyeon (㫌義縣) from 1679 to 1681.
Through this, I looked into Kim Seong-gu’s perception of Jeju Island and his work as governor.
First of all, the process of Kim Seong-gu’s appointment as Jeongui-hyeon governor was examined. King Sukjong exiled or demoted some of the Namin (南⼈) in 1679, one year before Gyeongsinhwanguk (庚申換局), as part of a check on Namin (南⼈). In this process, Kim Seong-gu was appointed as Jeongui-hyeon governor. Next, I looked at Kim Seong-gu’s perception of Jeju Island and the process of acquiring local information.
Kim Seong-gu recognized Jeju Island as an object of edification based on Neo-Confucian order. And he acquired local information about Jeju Island through Jeonguihyeonji (㫌義縣誌), Chungamrok (沖菴錄), and Namsarok(南槎錄). Lastly, I looked at Kim Seong-gu’s work at Jeongui governor. Kim Seong-gu collected jinsangmul (進上物) such as fish and tangerines. And he carried out the affairs of horse administration, such as the secure of Jinsang horses (進上馬) and the request for the postponing of the mountain horse market (山馬場). And famine relief was carried out.
