기원전 82-79년 독재관 술라의 권력과 로마의 원로원과 인민 = The Dictatorship of Sulla and Its Contemporary Reception

Lucius Cornelius Sulla (138-78 BC) played a pivotal role in the fall of the Roman Republic by introducing civil war into Roman politic. As consul in 88 BC, Sulla marched on Rome with his army when his enemies insulted his dignitas. His decisive victory at the battle of the Colline Gate on the 1st November 82 BC against the Marians was followed by massacres and proscriptions. Sulla then revived the dictatorship, which had been in abeyance since the Second Punic War, but his term as dictator was not limited to the customary six-month period. Sulla’s career was controversial already among his contemporaries. This paper examines how Sulla attempted to define and establish his unprecedented power which was earned through a civil war victory and considers the extent to which his coercive methods encountered opposition from his contemporaries. What emerges is a collision between the new power which Rome had not seen before and the Republican principle of freedom of the Senate and the People of Rome.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

루키우스 코르넬리우스 술라(기원전 138-78년)는 집정관이었던 기원전 88년, 정적들에게 모욕을 당하자 휘하의 로마군을 이끌고 로마를 점령하여 내전을 일으켰다. 기원전 82년 내전에서 승리한 이후에는 이른바 ‘법익박탈자명단공고’를 통해 체계적으로 정적들을 살해하는 방식을 최초로 도입하였으며, 제2차 포에니 전쟁 이후로 임명된 적이 없었던 독재관직을 120년 만에 부활시켜 6개월로 한정된 독재관의 임기를 철폐한 후 독재관으로서 여러 입법을 단행하였다. 로마에서 선거가 아닌 내전에서의 승리가 권력의 근거가 된 것은 모두 처음 경험하는 일이었다. 이 논문은 먼저 술라가 마리우스파에 최종 승리를 거둔 후부터 독재관을 지낸 시기 그가 어떻게 자신의 새로운 권력을 규정하고 강요하였는지 살펴본다. 그리고 술라가 지낸 독재관직의 성격과 한계를 규명하면서 로마의 원로원과 인민은 술라의 권력을 어떻게 받아들였는지 고찰한다. 그리하여 기원전 82년 술라가 로마를 장악한 이후, 폭력에 근거한 독재관 술라의 권력과 원로원과 인민의 자유라는 공화정의 원칙과 전통이 충돌하였음을 밝힌다.
