Recently, smart building technologies have been emphasized to improve energy performance and the indoor environmental satisfaction. An air-handling unit (AHU) plays a big role in the both perspectives. Since various sensor errors in AHU directly influence the energy efficiency and comfort of occupants, current studies have been aimed to detect sensor errors. However, simply detecting sensor errors is incomplete solution to deal with sensing issues because the location and details of sensor errors are still undetermined. To overcome the limitation of current studies, this study proposes a virtual sensor-based fault detection and diagnosis method named VFDD. A proposed method not only detects but also diagnoses sensor errors. Thus, the unknown information including the location and error of faulty sensors can be identified by the suggested VFDD. In this paper, the VFDD method is proposed and then applied to the operational AHU of a small-sized office building using EnergyPlus.
