The purpose of this paper is to (1) examine the extent to which Korean learners of Japanese can infer the meaning of the postfixed verb -Tsuku in lexical compound verbs based on the meaning of the main verb Tsuku and (2) identify challenges in acquiring compound verbs through questionnaires and interviews with learners, while also exploring related issues.
The results indicate that learners’ ability to infer meaning is largely limited to basic physical usages of Tsuku, making it difficult to draw analogies to its psychological meanings. In addition, the study confirmed that defining the semantic functions of Tsuku, presenting the essential elements for action formation, and providing a core image diagram are effective in helping students understand the organic continuity of lexical compound verbs. Furthermore, the findings highlight key challenges in acquiring compound verbs, such as the incidental and limited nature of learning opportunities and the lack of established resources for independent study. To address these issues, the study emphasizes the need for comprehensive learning support, including well- structured compound verb lists, dictionaries, and study materials.
