We have been trying to find out the characteristics of Chungcheongbuk-do Palkyoung - the famous eight scenic sights at Chungcheongbuk-do in Korea. We have analyzed literatures, ancient documents, district records and on site studies. This study deals with 174 sights of 22 places in the Korean traditional landscape. The Chungcheongbuk-do Palkyoung has very special landscape characteristics compared with Sosang Palkyoung, famous eight sights or places at Sosang in China.
The geographical types of Chungcheongbuk-do Palkyoung can be divided into three areas: First, mountainous areas (41%) and second, waterfront areas (50%) and the last, plain areas (9%).
Based on the distance, it can be diveded into two types. First, the substantial subject of contracting at a close distance is dynamic. The last, the semantical subject of contracting at a long distance is still.
The result of analysis is that most of semantical subjects are nonexistent, but most of substantial subjects are designed as a national park and important cultural properties. Therefore, there seem to be reasonable factors for the substantial subjects to be a tourists' famous location.
The peculiarity of the topography and nature phenomenon that are subject to changes by season, time, and space is presented in the Korean word 'kyoung'.
And, the title 'kyoung' contains not only the meaning connected to human's ordinary life, but also utopia. The Chungcheongbuk-do Palkyoung was created not in a day but through a long time under the correlation with man and nature. So, we have to establish proper landscape plannings to prevent the Chungcheongbuk-do Palkyoung from being destroyed by man's foolishness. Finally, I hope that this study is fundamental data for carrying out the conservation of the historical landscapes and the landscape planning.
