최치원 영정 연구 = A Study on Portrait of Choi Chi-won

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 최치원 영정에 대한 총론적 관점에서 그 현황과 특성을 살피는데 목표를 두었다. 이를 위해 글쓴이는 최치원 영정의 봉안 장소와 제작 시기를 중심으로 그 현황과 실태를 따져보았다. 아울러 그의 영정을 공신․신선․유현풍의 도상적 유형으로 분류하여 그 특성과 의미에 대해 살펴보고자 했다.
오늘날 전해지고 있는 최치원 영정은 25여 종에 이른다. 현재 그의 영정은 오래 시기를 거쳐 제작 또는 이모(移模)되어 여러 시설에 봉안 또는 소장되고 있다. 이를테면 경남의 창원, 진주, 하동, 합천, 울산, 경북의 영덕, 안동, 경주, 청도, 고령, 대구, 그리고 전남의 광주, 전북의 군산, 익산, 정읍, 순창, 충남의 서산, 서천, 경기의 포천 등지의 영당‧사당‧서원)에서 봉안되어 있으며, 국내외의 여러 시설에 소장 또는 위탁 관리되고 있다.
이 가운데 제작 시기가 확실하게 알려진 경우는 무성서원의 영정과 표준영정이 있고, 두곡영당, 운암영당, 아산영당, 구회당, 상서장, 학남서원, 무성서원, 지산영당, 청성사, 쌍계사 등의 영정은 그 제작 시기를 나름대로 추정할 수 있으며, 그밖의 영정은 봉안 시설의 건립과 맞닿아 조성 시기를 짐작할 수 있다.
다음으로, 최치원 영정은 그를 추앙하는 사람들에 의해 다양한 도상으로 전해지고 있었다. 흔히 그의 주요 소요지였던 지리산 쌍계사본과 가야산 해인사본으로 나눌 수 있는데, 인물 표상은 복장, 주변 배경과 부가 기물 등의 도상을 통해 부각되고 있다. 이에 글쓴이는 최치원 영정의 유형을 공신도(功臣圖), 신선도(神仙圖), 유현도(儒賢圖)로 분류하여 그 특성과 의미를 살펴보고자 했다.
첫째, 공신풍의 최치원 영정은 조선시대 초기의 전형적인 공신 도상을 그대로 따르고 있다. 전신교의좌상으로 사모에 단령을 입고 공수자세로 의자에 앉아 있는 좌안칠분면의 도상이 일반적이다. 그런 경우 주변 배경은 담박하게 처리하거나, 각대, 흉배, 그리고 여러 기물을 배치함으로써 문신 관료의 모습을 부각시키고 있다. 그만큼 최치원의 재능과 업적을 추앙하려는 의도를 보여주고 있다.
둘째, 신선풍의 최치원 영정은 대개 삼신산에 앉아 있는 모습으로 형상화되고 있다. 아울러 인물 표상과 더불어 동자를 거느리고 있는 모습, 불자를 들고 있는 모습, 파초선을 들고 있는 모습 등의 도상으로 그려지고 있다. 그만큼 최치원을 신선으로 추앙하는 의미를 담아내고 있는 것이다.
셋째, 유현풍의 최치원 영정은 유학자들의 복장과 기물 등을 활용하며 문인 내지 사대부의 정제된 도상으로 형상화되고 있다. 그만큼 최치원을 유학자로 추앙하는 교의적 의미를 담아내고 있다.
이렇듯 최치원의 영정은 그의 영정은 정교적‧수기적‧제의적 의미를 다양하고 복합적으로 담아내고 있는 것이다. 그리하여 그를 추앙하는 문중 또는 후학들에 의해 수없이 모사되어 여러 영당과 서원, 사당 등에 봉안되어 정치적, 제의적, 학문적 의미가 더욱 확대되어 나갔다고 하겠다.
