시선추적장치를 활용한 인공지능 생성기가 생성한 섬네일과 네이버 웹툰 섬네일에 대한 시각반응 비교 연구 = A Comparative Study of Visual Responses to Thumbnails Generated by Artificial Intelligence and Naver Webtoon, Using Eye-Tracking Device

국문 초록 (Abstract)

2023년 4월 1일 만우절을 맞아, 네이버 웹툰은 이미지 생성기로 제작된 웹툰 썸네일과 웹툰 작가가 제작한 썸네일을 실험 자극으로 사용하여 20대 사용자의 시각적 반응을 비교 분석하였다. 시선추적장치의 AOI 분석 결과, 피험자들은 사람이 그린 웹툰과 인공지능이 그린 웹툰을 쉽게 구별했으며, 히트맵을 통해 남성 캐릭터보다는 여성 캐릭터, 글자보다는 이미지(특히 강한 인상을 주는 캐릭터)에 더 높은 주목도가 나타났음을 확인할 수 있었다. 피험자들은 그림의 재질감을 통해 인공지능과 사람의 작품을 구별했으며, 이에 따른 시각적 반응이 관찰되었다. 남녀 간의 응시 차이는 거의 없었으며, 범위가 작음에도 불구하고 사람이 아닌 이질적인 캐릭터(예: 괴물)에 대한 주목도가 높게 나타났다. 또한, 화면의 중앙에 위치하거나 큰 범위를 차지하는 메인 캐릭터에 대한 시각적 주의도 높게 나타났다. AI를 활용해 제작된 작품이 예술적 가치를 지니는지에 대한 논의는 여전히 진행 중이나, 미래의 AI 시대를 살아갈 예술가들은 경쟁이 아닌 상생의 자세로 새로운 기술을 수용할 준비가 필요하다. 또한, 인공지능의 범죄 악용을 방지하기 위한 법적 규제 마련이 우선되어야 하며, 이를 통해 AI가 올바르게 활용되어 우리의 삶의 질 향상에 기여할 수 있도록 다양한 연구가 필요할 것으로 보인다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Naver Webtoon compared and analyzed the visual responses of users in their 20s by using webtoons created by image generators and thumbnails made by webtoon artists as experimental stimuli on April 1, 2023. According to Eye-Tracking's AOI analysis, participants easily distinguished between webtoons drawn by humans and those generated by artificial intelligence. The heat map confirmed that there was higher attention paid to female characters than male characters, and more focus was placed on images (especially those with strong visual impact) than text. Participants could tell whether a work was AI-generated or human-drawn based on the texture and materiality of the image, which also influenced their visual responses. There was little difference in gaze patterns between men and women, and despite the small range, non-human, heterogeneous characters (such as monsters) attracted more attention. Visual attention was also high for the main characters, particularly those taking up a large portion of the screen or positioned centrally. While discussions about the artistic value of AI-generated works are ongoing, artists in the future age of artificial intelligence must be prepared to embrace new technologies with a collaborative, rather than competitive, mindset. It's crucial that we also prioritize the establishment of laws to prevent the misuse of AI for criminal activities. These regulations will provide a sense of security and protection, ensuring that AI is used responsibly and contributes to enhancing our quality of life. Research will be needed to ensure AI is used properly and contributes to enhancing our quality of life.
